This past summer, we felt the Lord asking us to consider offering our family to a child in need. We had talked of adoption casually many times over the years, but suddenly we were acutely aware that God might be asking more of us. We prayerfully considered foster care, and both domestic and international adoption.
Through a friend, we connected with an agency and became aware of their waiting children’s list. This is a list of children across the globe who, because of their identified needs, are more difficult to place in families. We were so moved by these little faces who were longing for families to call their own. A refrain from a familiar song continued to ring out in our hearts…”If not us, then who?”.
Our only hesitation was a significant one: a lack of resources. Yet, we were reminded of many times in Scripture when the Lord asked his people simply to give what they had, and trust that He would provide all that was needed. What we had to offer was our family, some minimal financial resources, and a longing to love a little one in need. We moved forward, trusting God to provide.
As we have journeyed this road, our constant prayer has been for the LORD to shut the doors if this was not His will for our family, and fling them open wide if He desired us to walk this path. He has faithfully opened them wide beyond our wildest imaginations!
God has clearly led us to a little boy across the globe. Already we have a love for this little one that is beyond telling. We are so overjoyed and eager for him to become a part of our family! He has been diagnosed with some significant health issues, which will require regular life-long care. While the treatment he is receiving now is adequate, it is not ideal. We long to bring him home as soon as possible so that he can get the ongoing care necessary for him to thrive.
The cost of this adoption will total between $35,000 and $42,000. (This amount includes both US and foreign country fees , agency fees, orphanage fees, travel costs, and miscellaneous expenses.) The number is staggering, and yet we know that it is not beyond our God! His heart is for the orphan. We desire to be His hands and feet in this, but we cannot do it alone.
We are diligently pursuing grant opportunities and have secured a part-time job to help gather the necessary finances, but in humility, we are also asking that you might prayerfully consider being a part of this adoption story.
We have been reminded again and again throughout this adoption process that our God gave up everything to make us His own. We pray that you, too, would know that He loves you with an everlasting love and that it is through the gift of His son, Jesus, that we become His children. This is love.
