What are you fundraising for?
The short story:
We will not be able to conceive naturally so we are fundraising for treatments that will allow us to have a baby.

The longer story:
We have found it helpful to hear other people's stories as we navigate this. So here is our story of how we got here and why we're fundraising.

Where are you from? What is your family like?

Karl—
I am originally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I met Dawn while I was attending school in Eugene. We got married in Seattle and lived in Arizona before settling in Vancouver. Our family is Dawn, myself, and Starby, our rescue puppy, who gives everyone just a little more dog-love in their lives.

Dawn— I’m originally from Southern California. I moved to Seattle for work in 2012 and met Karl there. We love living in the Pacific Northwest. Our family includes me, Karl, and our dog, Starby. We have a lot of fun together.

How did you meet?

Dawn was living in Seattle while Karl was finishing up his PhD in Eugene. While we were dating and engaged, we drove five hours between Eugene and Seattle nearly every weekend so we've seen a lot of the Pacific Northwest!

What issues are you facing now?
Karl—
A year ago we were diagnosed with a congenital issue that makes a conventional pregnancy impossible. We made many trips to various clinics and doctors as we gained information, took tests, and generally prepared ourselves for what's ahead.

Dawn—  No matter how much trying we do, we will need medical intervention to have a family. And we will have to have finances in place first before we can start.

How have you taken care of yourself during this process?

Karl— This has not been an easy road for either of us. The diagnoses and tests are draining. I have found making the effort to talk to others, Dawn foremost among them, has helped me to take stock of where I am and to remember that we are making progress however slow. Prayer helps considerably.

Dawn— Prayer does help, and holding onto hope. I am more of a private person. I have been in a great support group that's given me information and resources, as well as supporters to encourage me when I’m feeling discouraged.

What has been an encouragement to you during the infertility experience?

Karl— For me, talking with friends and family and getting my doubts out is most helpful.

Dawn— Reading other people’s experiences online helps me stay encouraged and remember we’re not alone. The Netflix documentary One More Shot was extremely helpful.

Any final thoughts?
THANK YOU. We really appreciate anything you can contribute to our goal. If there are any contributions over our goal we will pay them  forward to other families.
