Merry Christmas! The Reindeer Express Project is an initiative to bring the Christmas Spirit to over a dozen group homes for adults with developmental disabilities in Central Illinois.
Throughout history, people with developmental disabilities have been avoided, segregated, and mistreated. We have come a long way; however, people with developmental disabilities have still been disproportionately isolated in society even prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This Christmas Season many adults with developmental disabilities will not be able to get out to experience holiday traditions as they have in the past. Many may not be able to visit with family and friends because they have underlying health conditions that puts them at a higher risk of severe illness from Covid-19.
The Reindeer Express Project will provide a memorable Christmas experience for hundreds of adults with developmental disabilities. Group home residents will be able to interact and take pictures with Santa through windows and safe social distancing. Santa will deliver a gift to the front door containing an instant Christmas party for residents and staff on duty. Each instant Christmas party will contain:
Premade Christmas Cookie Decorating Kit from No Regrets Cookies
Hot Chocolate Mix (with marshmallows!)
Christmas Cups with lids
Christmas DVD
Nativity Craft
Elf Hats
Jingle Bell Necklace
Inflatable Christmas Ring Toss Game
Funds will also be used for packaging, fuel, and to add lighting and antlers to the Reindeer Express (my car), that will add a little sensory magic to Santa’s arrival. Deliveries will be prearranged with each group home for a Saturday or Sunday in December prior to Christmas.
Santa needs your help through financial support for this project to be successful. Together, we have the opportunity to create a magical experience filled with love and Christmas Spirit for some very special people.
