There’s No Place Like Home
Founded in 2012
In 2012, The Pet Prescription Team started a program called; “There’s No Place Like Home.” This projects goal, as well as vision, is extremely clear. To take the time and energy to create a relaxing atmosphere for a less fortunate resident/patient by giving them a room make over. We not only help them to pick up their scattered belongings, we transform their room into a place they feel comfortable in. We do this by talking to the patient, getting to know their likes and interests and from there we purchase items and make over their rooms to make them feel more at “home.” Hopefully leaving a lasting impression on their lives giving them hope and purpose.

The first room that we transformed was a gentle spirited man named Joseph Powell. Inspired by Powell's passion for bowling, the team gathered items from the sport and decorated his room. They included pins, balls, signed photographs by bowling professionals and bowling uniforms.

Joseph was overwhelmingly happy and surprised at his room make over. We decided right then and there that our vision of the; There’s No Place Like Home” project is to select a resident/patient each month and assist in making their room feel more like home.

Over the years the Pet Prescription Team volunteers have visited a multitude of facilities throughout the Southland. Through those visitations many of our volunteers have been affected and have observed that it is never an enjoyable time in anybody's family when one of your loved ones has to live in a health care facility or nursing home. Many times, new residents verbally complain that they do not want to move into the facility, and would rather just go home. What has been even more heartbreaking over the years is watching those that have been committed to a facility that have no personal belongings, family or friends to help them create a home like atmosphere in the place they now call home.

In 2013 the Pet Prescription Team had the blessing of meeting a wonderful mother during her son's cancer treatment at Kaiser Hospital in Los Angeles. To understand the effect of the No Place Like Home project  a letter from a mother speaks volumes about the gift of this project. We were able to provide gifts and a parade for her son, Ben though this project.  Her letter after Ben's parade will forever be a testament of how valuable this project is to those we are able to provide for through this project.

To Whom it may concern,

I wanted to write on behalf of Pet Prescription - just to let you know what they mean to my family and I.  I didn't know Pet Prescription existed, until
2013 (September) when my son was diagnosed with cancer, and started to receive chemo treatments down in Los Angeles at the Kaiser Oncology Offices AND at theKaiser Hospital.

We have a dog.  We don't live in LA.  We had to leave her behind every time my son had a treatment.  And then we experienced Pet Prescription!  What a mood lifter, and stress reliever! I would have to compare their visits to the clinic to a light turning on in a very dark room.  The various dogs that came through, each with their own personality, was something we looked forward to.  We did become very close to a few of the dogs and their handlers. We have pictures of the different dogs, and it was some of the few times we could get my son to smile in the midst of his chemo treatments.

I looked forward to them coming - not just for my son, but it was a stress reliever for me.  Here is this very loving animal, who comes by with someone who cares enough to make our lives just a little better, a visit at a time.  And the pets are so well trained.  I watched many a kid drop to the floor and hug the
dogs around their necks, petting them, looking at their ears, and the dogs sat there and let them do it.

As if that wasn't enough, when Pet Prescription learned that my son's cancer had returned, and that it had spread throughout his body, they packed up their pets, and put a parade together for my son! They came from Orange County California,to Bakersfield, California.  About 30 volunteers and their dogs, along with balloons, signs, a Police Car, a Hot Rod, gifts, and they were even able to get our local fire department to join them!  My son said, "This is the best day of my whole life."

Our lives have been enriched by Pet Prescription, and I'm so very thankful that they exist.  We love you all, and I thank you for what you do for our kids.
AND for us as parents.

Very sincerely and with much love,

 Diane Proctor

In 2014 we expanded the No Place Like Home  project to include children hospital rooms, outreaches to families in need of support by providing items for long term care during hospice care and in home care. This project also includes providing special events for oncology patients.  This project not only recognizes the patients struggle but acknowledges the families struggle during a very difficult time of illness. The animal assisted therapy visits we offer at the Pet Prescription Team provide an unconditional healing bond to all we visit. But the No Place Like Home project is a constant reminder after we leave that they are loved and appreciated leaving a lasting impression on their lives giving them hope and purpose.
