Help Veterans with Amputations Receive Life-Changing Device
Veterans give so much to protect our country. Now, it’s our time to give back!
In 2016, the VA medical centers treated nearly 90,000 veterans with amputations. Of those, 42 percent had amputations related to their military service.
For many amputees, long-term support and care –including rehabilitation and pain management – is needed due to conditions such as phantom limb pain (PLP). PLP refers to ongoing painful sensations that seem to be coming from the part of the limb that is no longer there. The limb is gone, but the pain is real.
My device, ELIX , specifically addresses phantom limb pain by stimulating periphery sensory nerves with vibrations. The vibrations activate large sensory nerve fibers, which carry touch and pressure stimulation to the brain. Activation of these large sensory nerve fibers closes the pain gate, thus inhibiting pain signals from reaching the brain.

TheraV’s founder, Amira Idris, is a biomedical engineer with a master’s and bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware. She was inspired to find a way to help amputees manage phantom limb pain after a life-changing encounter with an above the knee amputee while working at a prosthetics clinic during her time at the University of Delaware. Amira’s ultimate career goal is to combine her engineering and entrepreneurship background to further improve the quality of life of people in need.
