Help Alex Receive Life-Changing Therapy and a Safer Future
My name is Magdalena Laskawy, and I am a single mother of two wonderful children – Melanie (2015) and Alex (1017).
Alex was born with a rare genetic disorder called CHARGE syndrome.
After Alex was born, he was diagnosed with numerous serious congenital defects, including:
– a complex heart defect (TAC 1A, VSD, ASD)
– a cleft lip, palate, and gum
– atresia and underdevelopment of the posterior nasal passages
– damage to the optic nerves (coloboma)
– hearing impairment, esophageal reflux, and testicular ectopia.
From the very first moments of his life, Alex has been fighting to survive. Doctors didn’t believe he would make it through birth. He spent months in intensive care, underwent more than twenty surgeries – including open-heart surgery, abdominal operations, and treatments to help him breathe and eat on his own.
Today, Alex is a happy and brave little boy, but his development is still delayed – he is at the level of a 2-3-year-old. Every step he takes, every new word, every smile is the result of hours of therapy, patience, and endless love.
Therapy gives Alex a chance for independence
Specialist therapies – speech, physiotherapy, occupational and sensory integration – help Alex improve coordination, communication, and self-reliance.
He is now at the perfect age for learning, and regular therapy brings visible results.
Unfortunately, many of the most effective treatments are not covered by public health insurance, and each rehabilitation camp, therapy session, and piece of adaptive equipment costs a fortune.
As a single mom, I do everything I can – I work, I take care of both children, I manage the household, and I keep fighting for Alex’s progress. But on my own, I simply can’t afford to give him all the support he needs.
