An educational Movement rooted in the arts. Our mission is to revolutionize the educational system while using art as a vehicle for activism and social change.
THE FREE ART PROJECT
A multi-faceted grassroots arts program, which includes a series of showcases, open mics and various networking events, as well as an array of educational workshops that are free & open to the public.
The main objective of our campaign is to raise the funds needed to fix the basement at el fogon. We have access to a basement space that needs cleaning and small repairs. The extra space will allow us to expand our programming.
This past Fall, The Artist Collective received a grant from The Elias Foundation for equipment to bring back a music workshop series for that summer. We held the workshop a few years ago but it was discontinued because of lack of funds. The funds from this campaign will also help ensure the continuity of this program, as well as the previous established events/workshops, throughout the year.
Workshops & Recurring Events
· WORDPLAY: Spoken Word, Hip Hop & Theater Workshop Series
Poetry is the art of transforming your ideas, beliefs, fears, emotions or any thought into words. It is more than just playing with words, but writing in such a way that the words play with each other. Spoken Word is a performance aspect of poetry that is written and recited aloud. WORDPLAY is a workshop series that combines classic writing techniques while incorporating performance elements of theater, hip-hop and spoken word.
About the workshop:
These writing workshops will provide students with skills in areas of expression, introspection, public speaking, constructive criticism, teamwork and tolerance. These skills are not only vital in the academic arena but also useful in both professional and personal environments. Every workshop supplies a supportive atmosphere and a place to receive feedback and build new ideas.
· Boxing Drills Meets Life Skills
About the workshop:
This workshop will exhibit the connection between Life- Skills and Boxing as a discipline/Science
· A Thousand Words: Writing Through Photography
Photos capture moments in time and often these photos speak so strongly that they can convey an entire story within a single image. A Thousand Words explores the essence of photography while incorporating creative writing and poetry to extract the stories that dwell within these images.
About the workshop:
These workshops will provide students with basic photography skills, learning to handle a camera and understanding the mechanics and techniques for capturing images. We aim to provide well-rounded workshops to ensure appreciation for both physical and abstract aspects of the art form. Workshops will also provide critical thinking skills through various photographically inspired writing prompts. In addition, participants will acquire skills in team building, providing and receiving constructive criticism and public speaking.
· Poetry in Motion: A Spoken Word & Dance Collaboration
With Poetry’s power to move us, and the ability of dance to leave us speechless, both stand firmly on its own. Poetry in Motion explores both genres of expression while bridging the gap between these two versatile art forms.
About The Workshop:
Students will have an opportunity to learn basics of poetry and dance while exploring the fundamentals of collaboration and teamwork. Specific session will be centered on original pieces of music, which will act as a foundation for each project.
· Anatomy of an Idea: Interactive open mic where art meets activism and social change.
Ideas are the beginning of all human achievement. Each month we begin the event with a community discussion where we build on ideas, address issues of concern within our community and network with other community leaders to collaborate on social justice endeavors followed by an Open Mic centered on community awareness and social justice.
· The Bean Runner Poetry Project: Open Mic & Workshop Series
There are not many open mics in Peekskill and even fewer that are youth based. The few workshops that are for youth are expensive which exclude children from low-income families. This series provides free workshops for the community as well as a monthly open mic to provide a platform for expression.
· Artist Collective Game Night
A Networking Event/Game Night focused on giving those on the front lines of social justice a break from the stress of these everyday endeavors to relax and have fun while enjoying each other’s company.
· The Artist Collective Coat Drive
Annual coat drive event that runs from October until the beginning of December. The donated coats and clothing are hand delivered to those in need by a network of volunteers from our collective events.
