The Aftermath goes Global

Donation protected
Dear friends, family and fans,
We are a group of 9, 10 and 11 year olds that built a vehicle to take a trip across the gym. Now we need your help to take a trip across the country.

We are The Aftermath and we compete in Destination Imagination ("DI"): a program in which you use creative and critical thinking to solve a problem as a team. Our team competes in the Technical Challenge in the Elementary Level. Our task was to make a vehicle that travels back and forth roughly 15 feet carrying a team member. It must use a different Movement Method and Propulsion System in each direction. If that sounds confusing to you, think of how that felt to us! We worked hard for five months with our managers, Mr. Bret and Mr. Kevin, to solve the challenge. (They had the hard job of keeping us focused, but the cool thing about DI is that ALL ideas and work have to be done by us kids.)

Unfortunately, at our Regional Tournament in March, we lost three-quarters of our Movement Method points because we misunderstood the rules. Turned out that most other teams did too. The result was a 2nd place finish for us and an invitation to compete in the State Tournament. Before the State Tournament in early April we fixed what was wrong with our Movement Method. The result this time was a shocking, exciting 1st place finish and an invitation to represent Washington State at the Global Finals. The Global competition is in Knoxville, Tennessee May 25th-28th. We are hard at work now trying to raise money to get us there. In addition to our own travel, housing and meal costs, we have to pay for a school district representative to accompany us and we have to pay to ship our vehicle, costumes and props to Knoxville.

Two of us (Parker and Noah) competed at Global Finals last year with a different team. Guess it's not technically a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity, but it sure feels that way! The best part about "doing DI" is seeing how your team solves problems in a way you never imagined alone. The best part about "doing DI" at Globals is meeting kids from across the whole world and learning how they've solved the same problem in completely new ways.

We appreciate any donation you can make to help us.

Sincerely,
Abby, Atticus, Claire, Janet, Noah and Parker
