The Village Hope - Phase II

I have shared with many of you the story of Lizzie, my Kenyan daughter that I have been sponsoring for the last 10 years.   While Liz is an orphan and has lost both her mother and father, her grandparents are still alive, and we went for a visit on our recent trip to Africa. 

Liz has been telling me of their living conditions for years, but it was so much worse than I had imagined. Granny and Grandpa live in a house made of dirt and cow dung. While everything looks green in this picture, its only because we visited during the end of the rainy season.


Every year during the dry season, vegetables stop growing in their garden and the chickens have no food to eat.  Because they can't grow vegetables and get eggs, they have nothing to sell and then they cannot buy flour or cornmeal to supplement their diets.  And sometimes the drought is so bad, that they have no food left to eat themselves.

Lizzie also shared how fresh water is not readily available and her Gran  must ask one of the village children to get her water every day.   Someone must walk over an hour away to get a single bucket of water from the village well.  But it isn't really a well, it's just a dirty hole in the ground where water sits.  In addition to collecting drinking water, people do thier laundry and bathe in what, to us in America, would amount to a glorified puddle.   




So we decided to do something about this.  Instead of Liz's grandmother having to walk so far just for a  sip of dirty water or rely on the generosity of neighbors to bring her water, we have offered to put in a well near their home. In addition to helping Liz's family, the well will provide water for anyone in the village.  

They started digging a few weeks ago.  This lady heard about it and walked several miles to get water that she knew would be healthy.  But the well wasn't finished yet.  And because the rainy season has started once again, it is difficult for the workers to be digging.    



But the well will get finished.  Dave and I have already funded some of this.  And then we had so many of you ask about the Villagers after you helped for Christmas that we decided to ask again.  Won't you also please consider helping with the building of the well?   This well will help hundreds of families in the village of Uloma have not only access to water, but access to good, pure, clean water for the rest of their lives. 

Liz herself is taking care of the distribution of funds and I am confident that every dollar we send will go towards the building of this well.  Please consider a donation to make these people's lives just a little easier.  Life shouldn't be so hard.  And we can help.
