The unluckiest person I've ever met...

Donation protected
Dear reader,

Let me explain about the title, I know there are many, many unlucky people in the world. This person truly is by far the unluckiest person I've ever met. Let me explain.

Hi! My name is Kristin and I am organizing this for my dear friend, Karen. I know what you're thinking but don't worry she's not *that* kind of Karen.

Karen has a heart of gold! She would literally give you the shirt off her back if it would ease your troubles. She is also one of the hardest workers I know. Aaaannd simply put she has the worst luck of anyone I've ever met and that's really not an exaggeration.

I don't want to bombard you with long paragraphs so I'm going to opt for bullet points. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • It was at the END of a surgery to remove her large intestine and put in an ostomy bag , when the surgeon discovered she was MISDIAGNOSED with Crohn's Disease. When she woke up from an incredibly painful surgery that she actually has Ulcerative Colitis which could have been treated non-surgically had it been properly diagnosed.
  • Prior to her surgery she was going to the bathroom over 100x per day! No long car rides for fear that she wouldn't be able to find a bathroom in time.
  • As you can imagine, she wasn't able to hold down a job despite wanting to work. How do you keep a job when you have to spend more time in the bathroom because all the different medications for Crohn's aren't working? And her doctor refused to reconsider his diagnosis. He was sure!
  • Complications with her ostomy (2 hernias) has left her in a pretty sedentary lifestyle and she has gained over a 100lbs as a result.
  • Her new doctor wants to repair the hernias but would have to relocate her ostomy to the other side.
  • The doctor is recommending bariatric sleeve surgery to help her loose the weight so he can reverse the ostomy (ie. reconnect her remaining small intestine to her stomach) then simultaneously repair her hernias.
  • Her surgery was scheduled for 6 days away when she learned her insurance wouldn't cover the hospital she was supposed to have her procedure done because they don't give the insurance company a big enough discount. So now she's back to trying to figure out how and where to receive medical care.
  • Top that off with the fact that she's the first person in her family to go to college. Then graduate from grad school. I know this isn't bad luck but I figured you were due for something positive.
  • She also owns her own home. And has built a good chunk of equity in the house. Yes, another positive.
  • Because of all the expenses, she had to take out a second mortgage. They rate is variable and as you might guess, it is fluctuating all over right now.
  • She just got a foreclosure letter from Summit Credit Union. They wont help her with payment options. They just tell her she has to call housing authority.
  • She has 6 months to pay off her second mortgage or sell her house so it doesn't go to auction.

Believe me I know a lot of people are facing similar problems and I don't know what makes this different or more worth your while. I just know that my friend is in despair. She is at a dead end with her health, she applies for new jobs daily and keeps getting turned down, and now she's facing homelessness.

Just like in every story there's more. More examples to confirm that she is the unluckiest person I've ever know. It's Murphy's Law with her, if something could go bad, it absolutely will for her. And yet she refuses to stop trying. She wakes up everyday to a desperate set of circumstances on every front of her life and she greets the day with a smile. I truly don't know how she does it.

I can't adequately express our gratitude for you reading this far, made a donation (nothing is too small or too big), and / or sharing this so that more people see it and consider helping Karen. In a time when it feels like everyone is isolated, we realize that you can't make it through without the help of community.

In sincere gratitude,

Kristin & Karen
