The Twins' Hearts Need Help

Finding stray animals out in the country where I live has unfortunately become a common occurrence. Whether it's by chance, neglect, or abandonment, once we cross paths, I try to do whatever I can to help them transition from struggling to survive to finding their forevers.
Bernie and Lyra are two dogs on such a journey. Based on the circumstances of their situation, I believe they were abandoned/dumped. Though they had obviously been around people, they were not easy to capture initially; in fact it took 2 weeks of twice a day feedings to successfully trap them.
But once they were caught, it was obvious they were very sweet, scared and special dogs. 3 year old siblings of the Border Collie/Pointer variety, these two have depended on each other for survival. Whatever life they may have lived before, they clearly got through it together.
To say Bernie and Lyra are wonderful dogs is an understatement. They are extremely smart, sensitive and responsive. They love to play as much as nap in the sun. They are as hilarious as they are athletic, and have the fanciest feets you might ever meet. These are pure dogs in the best sense. Unfortunately, they are also heartworm positive.
Heartworm disease is just as nasty as it sounds. It's literally worms in the dog's heart, arteries, blood vessels and lungs. It's easy to prevent, but it's also easy to become infected. All it takes is a mosquito to bite one dog infected with it and then bite another dog who is not on preventative medication. Hundreds of worms can take hold and grow (up to 14 inches long!) in their vital organs. If left untreated, the dogs can suffer damage to their hearts, lungs, liver and kidneys, and ultimately die.
Properly helping wayward dogs find their way to forever is rarely easy or cheap. Finding two at the same time obviously makes it more challenging. But I, along with my friend Barbara who is fostering Bernie, have committed to helping these magical pups. Behaviorally, they have made amazing improvements with learning to trust and developing their individual personalities. Medically, we still have some work to do, and we need financial help to make it happen.
Full vetting of the twins will cost $2350. This includes complete heartworm treatment for each dog (3 injection protocol), as well as neutering for Bernie, and diagnostics/vaccines for both. This is what both dogs need before they can be adopted out. This is the cost of not just saving their lives, but also giving them better ones where they will be healthy, happy and loved.
I know this year has been tough for a lot of us, but if you can contribute to their journey in any way, whether it's financially or just sharing the campaign, it would be the most wonderful gift. I am not a rescue and I have no financial backing. I am just a diy girl saving animals and I appreciate (and need) all the help I can get for the more complicated and expensive endeavors, like this one.
