The story of Rainbow

This little girl, now named Rainbow was found lying down on the floor in a dog park on the 25th Aug in Randwick. Rainbow was bought in to Struggletown Vet by a lovely lady who watched her for over 30 minutes as she assumed she was owned as she had her lead attached to her collar.
On examination, her front leg looked to be broken. We offered her Pain relief, bandaged her leg and made her comfortable. We scanned her for a microchip and did not find one. We are not sure if she was left there hoping she would be found or made her way there and got lost, but after discussion with the council, as she was not legally owned, in the best interest of Rainbow she will be cared for by us.
We ran blood tests and under a general anaesthetic we took x-rays. These x-rays showed that she has a bad break just under her elbow. We had a specialist look at her x-rays and her arm will require plating for better healing (around six weeks recovery). Putting her leg just in a cast is an option but this will require 4-5 months of healing with strict cage rest and there is no guarantee that it will heal given the area where it is broken. This surgery will need to be done ASAP. This is to stop any deformities that might happen with the leg healing on its on.
Upon further examination, we realised that Rainbow has been severely neglected. She has severe dental disease, with some of her teeth literally crumbling out of her jaw, and she has pockets full of pus in her jaw due to infection. Rainbow also has four mammary tumours, likely because she is not desexed that will need investigating and need to be removed, and she will also need to be desexed to prevent further problems arising.
This is one of her teeth.
Upon starting this goFund me it has come to my attention that Rainbow’s Owner is a geriatric patient in ICU. She is not in a very good condition herself. Rainbow and the owner were staying with a carer, who according to the neighbours did not treat them very well. The carer has come in and said she does not want anything to do with her. Until the owner can or any other family members can or will come forward for Rainbow she will be safe with us.
We are hoping to raise some funds to go to towards Rainbows medical expenses, most will go towards things that need and can be done at Struggletown. For example her elbow plating, which will be done by an orthopaedic specialist, blood tests and pathology, which will also be required to be sent to an external lab and surgery for investigating her tumours.
On the weekend Rainbow had her dental surgery with almost a full mouth extraction. As her mouth has so much infection, she will need to have three more teeth removed at a later date, we couldn’t risk snapping her jaw during this surgery. She has also undergone multiple sedations for her cast changes and bloodwork.
She still needs x-rays of her chest to rule out any spread in cancers, this will be done before the tumour removal surgery. She will need a lot more x-rays of her elbow, desexing, heartworm test, and on-going physiotherapy and love.
Rainbow is a beautiful little dog, who has not shown any aggressivenss towards any of us, even on the examination of her broken leg. She has been through alot in the last week and we have all fallen in love with her very much.
The total we are trying to raise is $4000. $2500 of this will go directly to the specilist. My wonderful team at Struggletown Vet, and myself, are really grateful with any donations and sharing of this page as it all helps Rainbow get the care and treatment she deserves for the rest of her life.
