The state of golf in H-F

Hello, Eric Crump of the Chronicle here.

If you like greenspace. If you like golf. If you like the H-F Chronicle, we have a project that could use your help.

Let's tell the story: the state of golf in H-F

When an Arizona real estate firm proposed to replace historic Calumet Country Club with warehouses and truck traffic, many area residents and village officials were deeply alarmed at the prospect of losing so much beautiful green space and gaining noise and dust in return.

The Chronicle reported on the controversial redevelopment plan and the eventual disconnection of the property from the village of Homewood. And we got to thinking:

What about the rest of our golf courses?

Homewood, Flossmoor and Olympia Fields are blessed with many acres of tree-lined fairways and rolling greens, home to wildlife and native plants. Golf was instrumental in the development of our villages. It occurred to us that our community could no longer take for granted that the area's golf courses would be there forever. We decided to check and see how the rest were doing.

In partnership with Bionic Content of Flossmoor, we got to work creating a video to tell the story. We are putting the finishing touches on a short documentary that brings together sources from Ravisloe Golf Club, Flossmoor Golf Club, Idlewild Country Club, Coyote Run Golf Course and Olympia Fields Country Club.

Each course is unique, with its own history, characteristics and prospects. The story of how they together create a green jewel in suburban landscape is fascinating.

This project, however, is beyond our regular reporting in terms of scope and cost. We are reaching out to the community to help us finish the project and share the story, not only with our community but with the region.

Golf was key to the development of our community, and its presence remains an important recreation opportunity and a powerful draw.

Our goal is to raise $2,600 by Sept. 10. That will cover the cost of professional production and result in a showcase of our community that we can all be proud of. Anyone who contributes at least $10 will have their name included on a community sponsorship screen in the video and listed on the project page on the Chronicle website.

The Chronicle has always been blessed by generous community support. We appreciate your help in bringing you the stories that matter to our community.

You can help make this happen!
