SFN Charitable Org. Registration

For more than 12 years, the Special Friends Network (SFN) has operated as a grassroots initiative dedicated to supporting teens and adults with disabilities.

SFN was created to help individuals build meaningful connections and friendships, become more involved in their community, and promote inclusion, awareness and advocacy for the disability community. Through a wide variety of activities and events — including bowling, dances, cooking clubs, social gatherings, and volunteer opportunities — members are able to spend time with peers in an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment while meeting new people and strengthening long-term friendships.

In addition to recreational activities, SFN partners with community organizations and participates in volunteer initiatives that help members develop important life skills, independence, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging within the community. Peer mentors and volunteers play an important role in supporting programs, helping run events, and creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for everyone involved.

Over the years, SFN has welcomed many new members and experienced significant growth. As the need for inclusive social and community-based opportunities continues to increase, so does the need for additional support and resources.

Becoming a registered charitable organization will allow SFN to continue growing and expanding its reach. Charitable status would enable SFN to accept donations and provide tax receipts, helping to offset the many costs associated with operating programs and events. It would also support the recruitment of individuals who can assist with planning, program development, administration, and ongoing operations.

In addition, charitable status would help reduce financial barriers for members and families by lowering participation costs and allowing eligible expenses to qualify for tax receipts.

The dream has always been to provide the life-changing opportunities and sense of belonging that SFN offers to even more individuals in the community. Becoming a registered charity is an important step toward making that vision a reality.
