From the Solomon family:
Derrick and Deaglan went moose hunting September 20, 2022. At 1920 pm we did our messages of I love you and goodlucks. At this point the boys headed down the train tracks to hunt (very common hunting area, derrick frequents this spot). Within 14 minutes I got a phone call no mom ever wants to receive and no dad ever wants to give.

From this point on is graphic and may be hard to read. Down the tracks a little distance Derrick saw an animal that wandered on the track and judging by the size of it and where they were he assumed it was a moose. Once he got a little closer he was able to identify that it was a brown bear, but it walk into the woods with its cub. Derrick and Deaglan continued cautiously giving space. Suddenly the bear growled and stood on her hind legs. Without hesitation Derrick fired his gun and struck the mom. She slumped down and the baby ran off. Derrick felt she was too close for comfort and dangerously hurt at this point and perused to shoot her one more time to put her down. She lunged, Derrick shot, as she fell she attacked Derrick biting at his face, hands and arm. Derrick knew to play dead and she grabbed his pack and shook him like a rag doll and smashed him on the ground. At this sight Deaglan started screaming, immediately the bear dropped Derrick and clawed Deaglan’s leg and bit into his face. As she was shaking Deaglan around Derrick quickly regained himself grabbed his gun and shot the bear in the back of the head. Derrick then pulled Deaglan out of from under the then dead bear and they ran, not knowing if the other bear was near. Deaglan with all his injuries made it half way to the car before Derrick scooped him up and sprinted to the car with him. By the time Derrick got Deaglan safely laid safely in the car the paramedics arrived.

We all rushed to the hospital. Fast forward Derrick, myself and Deglan got flown with Life Med to Seattle.
Derrick skated by with high Creatine levels from exertion, causing severe muscle pain. Multiple punctures (under his neck, on his hand resulting in possible ligament damage, and his arms), and scrapes and cuts on his head and bridge of his nose.
Deaglan is currently in surgery his leg had five lacerations from the bears claws. This was sewn up miraculously without muscle damage. They are still working on his face damage (this includes tear duct tear, lacerations on his face, under his eye and on his cheek, his lip and other small holes on his face. He also has teeth damage, orbital bone fracture, and potentially other fractures. ) Lastly, he broke both bones in his left wrist and will require splint or cast.

Thank you all for the prayers, and support.

9/27 UPDATE: Deaglan is recovering so well. They want to discharge him to the local hotel so that he can do some follow up care, but he doesn’t need to be taking up a hospital bed that others really need.
Today he had his IV removed and had a ton of visits by doctors. We got to see all of the amazing people on all five of his surgical teams, and then OT, PT, Speech, psychology and the list goes on.
Unfortunately, Deaglan will require more surgery to his orbital floor and orbital bone. His eye has settled too far and limiting movement on his left eye. The original plan was to do a surgery with titanium mesh, but at the time of his surgery it was an impossiblility due to swelling and bleeding. They were hopeful that what they supplemented with was going to be the permanent fix, but unfortunately his eye ball has drooped and it is significantly impacting his eye mobility. They need to go back in and do the originally planned surgery. To do this they will need to take him back in for the surgery. This should just be an overnight stay and then he will, fingers crossed , head home the next day.
