The Science Kit Fundraising

Growing up, when the word "scientist" was brought up at school, it was often accompanied by the names "Albert Einstein", "Isaac Newton", "Thomas Edison", or "Galileo". As an Asian American, I began to wonder, "Why are there no scientists who look like me?". Fortunately, I was able to learn from my parents that there are, in fact, Asian scientists. I was taught that there are actually scientists of all backgrounds. However, not every child has the privilege of having someone explain to them that there are actually people who look like them in STEM. Countless young students are being driven away from STEM due to a lack of representation and role models for them to look up to. With The Science Kit, I hope to demonstrate there is a place in STEM for everyone.

Every cent helps!

The Science Kit is an organization that puts together science kits for younger students (ages 6 to 11) who have backgrounds disproportionately underrepresented in the STEM field. The Science Kit will include 1) materials for two experiments, 2) letters from older members of underrepresented groups currently pursuing a career in STEM which serve as real-life examples of what’s possible, and 3) other resources linked to our website. We hope that these kits will inspire and encourage students to feel less intimidated by STEM and perhaps even decide to pursue a career in STEM.

The Science Kit aims to excite the next generation of innovators about what’s to come and what STEM holds. We are aware of the disproportionate underrepresentation of certain backgrounds in STEM, especially historically marginalized groups such as Hispanics, BIPOC, and women. For example, women make up 47% of the total workforce but only occupy 24% of STEM jobs. Furthermore, the current COVID-19 pandemic restricts students’ access to hands-on activities that would normally take place at school. We aspire to create meaningful experiences for young thinkers with the intent of demonstrating that there is a place for everyone in STEM.

The Science Kit has already developed and planned out six experiments for our first round of kits. We are also in the process of reaching out to older members of underrepresented groups. We plan on creating around 48 kits that will be sent to 16 students over the span of three months (June - Aug 2021). Currently, we need to secure funding for this project. Budgetary information can be found in our prospectus.

The Science Kit currently needs $850 in order to send out the first round of kits. We hope you support us in empowering the next generation of thinkers, creators, and doers. More budgetary information can be found in our prospectus  on the page titled “Budget Breakdown”.
