Dreams and means: we all dream; we all long; we all aspire. The lucky ones have the means to realize their dreams; those less fortunate may have to give up their dreams; no means, no dreams. Think of a young girl who aspires to become a doctor, a teacher, a tech expert. Put yourself in the shoes of a Bangladeshi woman dreaming of being free to provide for her children’s economic needs by selling dresses she has learned to sew, by creating a business and keeping account of financial transactions, as she has learned to do in entrepreneurship and financial literacy classes. Think of changing the life of an underage girl in a marital rape situation who may learn through an awareness program that she can defend herself and teach the men around her as well.  We have started the initiative, but you can actually make change happen by supporting our educational programs. Education is a human right (Article 13, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights), both because a well-educated, enlightened and active mind, able to wander freely and widely, is one of the joys and rewards of human existence, and because education and development on all levels, especially education that stresses gender equality, are inextricably linked. Everyone deserves a chance to go to school, irrespective of their gender, origin or nationality.

There is deep satisfaction and great power in making a difference where it counts, in changing lives, in helping people to realize their innate dignity and their dreams, in giving generously to those in need. The reward lies in effecting the lasting change that will lift a marginalized community out of poverty and despair into a life in which their dreams are realized. Ignorant, poor and abused girls are not at fault for having been born into a poor and patriarchal society that does not dignify them with equal rights. The miracle is that you can change their lives. No girl should suffer, no human being should suffer, and our common humanity dictates that we help one another for the good of all.

How You Can Help Change a Girl’s Life

“Women are over half of the world’s population, yet they do two-thirds of the world’s work, earn one-tenth of the world’s income, and own less than one-hundredth of the world’s property.” (UNESCO)

Gender bias is nowhere clearer than in the education of girls. Of the 774 million adults (15 years and older) who still cannot read or write, two-thirds of them (493 million) are women. In many countries, including Bangladesh, the girl child suffers discrimination from birth through childhood and into adulthood. UNICEF reports that gender disparity in Bangladesh is one of the highest in the world, and women live very harsh lives. 29% of girls are married before the age of 15, and 65% before the age of 18.  Almost 50% of women in Bangladesh are subject to domestic violence with no acknowledgement or action taken against such brutality. Social norms sanction beatings and even marital rape, and women are accorded little or no agency in relationships.

 

What good is education in this situation?

1.      Education is the foundation for empowerment and gender equality.

2.      It enables women to safeguard children from hazardous labor and sexual exploitation. 

3.      It provides essential information concerning health (including family planning), employment opportunities, and social networks.

4.      It teaches women to conserve and enhance the environment in which they live and work.

5.      It enables women to access the justice system, enter into contracts, and resolve disputes.

6.      It enables women to harness a country’s economic potential and increase individual production.

7.      It enables a woman to use the technology needed for information, communication and decision-making.

8.      It reduces child marriage by giving girls and women a path to employment and productivity.

9.      It enhances a sense of agency and dignity which permits women to resist and take measure against  violence directed against them. It has a positive effect in reducing trafficking and modern day slavery.

10.  It is the most reliable means of reducing poverty for all.

Who are we?

The Poverty Elimination and Community Education (PEACE) Foundation USA is an advocacy and development-oriented organization based in New York whose aim is to create better, more inclusive societies through social change. We work around the world to help underprivileged communities to reduce and finally to eliminate poverty through education opportunities for marginalized women and girls.

 

What have we achieved?

Our school https://peacefoundationusa.org/the-school-in-shibput/  combines preschool, kindergarten and primary school curricula with vocational training in sewing, block printing, computer literacy and technology. It also provides awareness training, financial literacy training and entrepreneurship strategies. We have 260 new applicants waiting to join our school.
