The rescue dog's story (who we are referring to as Willie Nelson, since Waylon Jennings, Jessie Colter, and June(Jade) Carter already live at our house).
On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 17, 2017, my family & I came across a little black dog on the side of the road. After noting it's unsteady gait, we pulled over and realized the dog was injured. Dragging his hind-legs, the little black dog came towards us wagging his tail. There was no way I could leave him there. So we brought him home and met with our vet this morning.
The Vet thinks he is approximately 9 months old, and likely a purebred German Shepard. After a series of xrays today, he has some significant fractures to his acetabulum on the left and a break and dislocation of the femoral head on the right. The Vet suspects this injury happened approximately 4-6wks ago. Good news, is he doesn't appear to be in pain and is compensating with his gait and getting around pretty good. He has no notable spinal cord or column damage as he wags his tail (a lot) and has good rectal tone. Bad new, he will need reconstructive surgery with hardware placement for his hips. The Vet seems to feel pretty confident the surgery could be successful for him. Unfortunately, surgeries such as these cost approximately $4,000. At this time, my Family and I have decided to give Willie a fighting chance and go forward with the surgery.
While we await our consult appointment with a surgeon at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists (AVS) in Gainesville, FL , we have begun some maintenance with Willie: deworming, flea & tick prevention, and heart worm treatment. Willie also needs lots of weight, so we will be working on that too. Our Vet also sent us home with anti-inflammatory medications and steroids to keep him comfortable until surgery. It will be a process to get him back to his optimal health but we willing to accept the challenge. We plan to do LOT's of fund raising and would love all the help, suggestions, and support we can get!! Thank you so much.
