The Rebirth of Tyler's Bee Yard

Des Moines, Iowa was inundated with rain on June 30th 2018. 
Many people in the metro spent the evenings bailing water out of their basements and trying to get home safely as the streets filled with record breaking amounts of rain. Many of us waited to see if we would be affected by the water in any way.
One of those people was Tyler Lane.
Many of you who know Tyler know all about her passion and purpose with beekeeping. 
Tyler started Beekeeping as a hobby in 2015. 
 
Tyler's deep yearning for knowledge about whatever she's currently interested was no exception when it came to her first hive. 
I had never seen her light up from the inside out as much as she did when she got her bees. 

She started her beekeeping adventure while living in the city. Around that same time her sister and her brother in law bought a property by Four Mile Creek. Slightly weary about expanding her dream on her city lot, Tony and Brittany offered up part of their land for the Bee Yard, under one condition. Honey for Mead. ;) 


At the time Tyler was in school, finishing a degree to become a financial planner while staying home until all of her babies were in school.
I remember having a conversation with Tyler asking why she didn't turn her obsession with bees into more than a hobby. Her response was something along the lines of "I can do both and I have to have a grown up job...yadda yada blah" I said "Ok, but you know if you follow your passion with this you will always be fulfilled and I have never met anyone who loves beekeeping and understands the bees like you do" So I just left that there for a while. 


Beekeeping became a family project in the Lane household. Tyler's children have her same freethinking drive to love all things, so naturally they dove in to whatever mom has going on.
You could say throughout the many seasons of her beekeeping life it also made her marriage to Joe stronger. Tyler's joy and passion for bees pours out of her and into others. She truly has a gift.
Tyler has attended many classes, conferences, taught classes and is very active in the Beekeeping community. She offers to put hives around the county so people can see the benefits of the bees. She does so many things for the community with bees I can't even list them all out.
She has quickly realized her need to fulfill her calling as a Beekeeper!
Maybe in a parallel reality she can be a financial planner. ;)

She has jumped into the realm of grafting queens. Now she doesn't know I am doing this and I know absolutely nothing about it. But I can tell you that the ability to create native Queen Bees is a pretty big deal.



Tyler found out on the evening of June 30th that her entire bee yard was submerged under multiple feet of water.
She had 17 full hives and 36 mated splits. The loss in unimaginable. 
I will not be posting images of the damages because its important to focus on what can become of this, not what was lost.

Beekeeping is not an inexpensive investment when you have the amount of hives that Tyler established. On any given day you could find Tyler hauling wood and tools to build hive bodies. She was determined to keep her bees healthy and happy. 
We are raising money to bring back Tyler's Bee Yard so she can continue on with sharing with the community all of her knowledge and the importance of beekeeping. The donations will go towards hive bodies, new bees, and beekeeping equipment.
