Our country's first summer camp for young Black girls is back!! We need your help to make the vision of Camp Founder Girls come back to life and bring summer camp to more young women of color!
This June we will be resurrecting one of the nation's first summer camps for Black girls: Camp Founder Girls which begin in 1924 and unfortunately ceased operations in 1964 (see history below). We have a highly-committed staff of amazing women ( Over 90% of our volunteer staff are women of color) who have dedicated a week of their summer to see Camp Founder Girls come back to life ---This means that 100% of your donations goes directly into programming, food, transportation, outdoor gear, and apparel for the next generation of Founder Girls:
A donation of $30+ provides apparel for a camper
A donation of $75+ provides food and transportation for a camper
A donation of $150+ provides food, transportation, and lodging
A donation of $225+ provides a scholarship for a camper
Did you know that only 4% of summer camp participants are African-American/Black? Black Outside, Inc with the help of funders like you seeks to expand the powerful summer camp experience to more young women of color, particularly Black and Latina girls. But we don't want just any summer camp experience, we are creating a summer camp that builds on the rich cultural history of people of color in the outdoors and transforms the lives our young women.
Our History
In 1924, a woman by the name of Mattie Landry had a vision for a summer outdoor experience that would transform the lives of young Black girls in the San Antonio Eastside community. After being denied funding and support from local outdoor organizations due to the color of her skin, she decided to start (found) a camp herself: Camp Founder Girls. Ms.Landry worked tirelessly with her husband and the St.Paul Methodist community to raise the money necessary to build a campsite in Boerne, TX. Camp Elvira (named after her late mother) which opened in the summer of 1924 with 75 campers became one of our country's first summer camp for Black students, the first summer camp for Black girls.
Over the course of its forty-year history, Camp Founder Girls served over 3,000 young black women from across San Antonio. After the passing of Mrs. Landry in the 1960s, the camp ceased operations and the land was sold, yet the legacy of Camp Founder Girls lived on in the memories of her final group of campers. With the help of former Camp Founder Girl Gaynell Gainer (Camp Founder Girls '58), the St.Paul Methodist Church Community, and Black Outside, Inc, Camp Founder Girls is BACK to carry on the legacy of Mrs. Landry.
This summer Camp Founder Girls will relaunch on June 17th-22nd in Kerrville, TX at MoRanch Retreat Center. Thanks to a highly-committed group of volunteer educators, 100% of your donation goes directly to transformative programming, gear,and apparel for the next generation of Camp Founder Girls.
