The Prince of Rome Plaque - Tudhoe Colliery

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Kalwinder Singh Dhindsa. I am a local historian who loves sharing stories about my hometown of Derby.

I have created this page to raise funds for another plaque for a pigeon, having already put up a plaque for 'The King of Rome' in Derby.

This time, I have plans to unveil a tribute to the legendary 'The Prince of Rome' Racing Pigeon of Tudhoe Colliery and its owners, Henry Vester, Richard Scurr and his son William.

How the Prince of Rome was found 100 years after its death.

The plaque will be installed inside The Black Horse Inn & Pitman’s Grill Restaurant, 4 Attwood Terrace, Spennymoor.

This tribute is important to me because in my opinion the story of 'The Prince of Rome' of Tudhoe Colliery should forever be celebrated in the same breath as the story of 'The King of Rome' of Derby.

'The King of Rome' may have won the Rome Race, but 'The Prince of Rome' had travelled further, to return home to Tudhoe Colliery having taken a slightly longer time to do so.

In doing so POR smashed the record for the longest distance ever flown by an English racing pigeon, 1,093 miles and 1,186 yards in 51 days.

The Unthanks - King of Rome - Written by Dave Sudbury of Derby.

The story of 'The Prince of Rome' is an inspirational tale of defiance in the face of, what appears to be, impossible odds. A reminder to us all to never give up when going through extreme difficulties in life.

'The time is now right to bring POR back home to Tudhoe Colliery, again'
