The Police Accountability Board Alliance supports the Rochester Police Accountability Board! Legislation that was voted on and passed unanimously on May 21, 2019 by Rochester City Council was voted on by referendum garnering 75% of city voters in favor of its creation. The PAB members have been selected but the Rochester Police Locust Club continues to push its lawsuit against the PAB. Judge Ark stripped the board of its disciplinary power until the case resolves. An appeal is scheduled to be heard sometime in September 2020.
The Alliance helps select members for the board,educate the public, and offer support to the PAB and its members in their work. All money raised through this page will be used for Alliance purposes as determined by the Alliance and its membership.
The legislation is not a be-all and end-all solution, it's not exactly what we have been advocating for, and may not work in the same way that we imagined it would. However, the legislation is a good step toward substantive police accountability. All parties throughout this process are to be commended for their time, effort, and courage in getting us to this point. Special thanks goes out to City Council President Loretta Scott for her continued work and commitment over these past couple of years.
We commend the work and support of the 54 member organizations of the Alliance, the Genesee Valley Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) and the United Christian Leadership Ministry of Western NY. Through our efforts over these past four years, we have been able to bring the most progressive civilian oversight legislation in the country into existence. As the board is implemented and the court case winds its way to conclusion, it is vitally important to remember and honor those whose lives that have been disrupted, uprooted, destroyed or ended by police misconduct committed by the Rochester Police Department.
