The paradox of Seabrook Farms

https://meritsproductions.com/ The paradox of Seabrook farms – a new documentary film of Helga Merits.

During and after the Second World War people of different nationalities, who had nowhere else to go, ended up in Seabrook Farms, New Jersey.  The work was very hard, the days extremely long and yet for their children they were able to create a rich cultural life and many opportunities for their future.

Though the stories of Seabrook Farms are situated in the fifties and sixties of last century there are strong parallels to the current political climate and the difficulties large numbers of refugees encounter to find a place to live and build up a new life for their families.

The film will show what it means to start a new life with nothing but a suitcase, to overcome hardships and create possibilities. It is about history; of the Japanese American community, of Estonian and Latvian refugees, but it is very much about today as well: everyone who faces setbacks can not only learn from this film but get inspiration from it as well.

The work on the film will consist of three phases. I’m now looking for support for the first phase: research, filming, scriptwriting, first editing of the material.
