The Palmer Hall

The Palmer Hall is an important and historic part of Fairford. It is a focal point for community activity and is used every day by a wide range of community groups. It is the only community hall in Fairford with a stage and has been used for amateur dramatic productions, musicals, reviews and concerts.
Built in 1936, the Palmer Hall is now 82 years old and needs a complete make-over to update it and bring it into the 21st Century. The Hall is an important and historic part of Fairford and there is a lot of work that needs doing now to refurbish it to honour the legacy left to the town by Colonel Palmer.
Maintaining it in good condition is key and the renovations being proposed to the main hall and toilets as well as preserving the exterior fabric are vitally important to ensuring that the Palmer Hall’s future is secured.
History of the Palmer Hall
The land for the Palmer Hall was donated to the people of Fairford by Arkells Brewery, who also owns the Plough Inn next door. The hall was built of stone on the site of the old Assembly Rooms and was funded by Colonel Palmer, who lived at Fairford Park House. The flooring in the main hall is made of Australian Jarrah wood and is said to have come from the trucking alley at the Huntley & Palmer Biscuit factory in Reading where Colonel Palmer was a Director.
What work needs doing to the Palmer Hall?
· Complete make-over of the main hall with plastering of walls, painting of walls and woodwork, new blinds for the windows, new stage curtains, re-wiring of the audio system, installing fire doors, widening of doors for disabled access.
· Up-dating of ladies’ toilets with new sanitary ware, painting and decorating, radiator and heating.
· Up-dating of men’s toilets with new sanitary ware, painting and decorating, radiator and heating.
· Installation of complete new disabled toilet in the storage area to the left of the stage with new stud walls and disabled access.
· Outside guttering to be replaced in parts.
· Outside painting and decorating.
How much will this cost?
It is estimated that the work will cost in the region of £70,000.
How much has been raised so far?
So far, the Palmer Hall Committee has raised £19,000 through fund-raising events, grants and donations.
How will the rest of the money be raised?
By further grant funding and donations and with the help of the local community.
