The Nyawa United Project - community development

Donation protected
The Nyawa United Project – empowering rural communities through self-help is a humanitarian project where the objective is to continue the long-term sustainable development in Nyawa, a village in the Southern Province of Zambia, by strengthening girls and women’s rights.

Females are a marginalized group in Zambia, lacking the same socio-economic opportunities and resources as their male counterparts. This is due to illiteracy, traditional gender roles, child marriage and early pregnancies. As a consequence, they are not aware of their rights, lacking life-skills, as well as being socially and economically deprived, and therefore not able to fully embrace their potential.

Mothers' Shelter:
The Nyawa United project is upgrading and extending the already existing mothers' shelter (see video below).

The mothers’ shelter safeguards women’s rights, dignity and security, but due to the increasing demand and lack of space, many women have to sleep on the veranda outside. Many women start the long journey from surrounding villages when they are 6-7 months pregnant and many walk as far as 50 km.  The women sleep on thin mattresses or directly on the concrete floors. The rooms lack beds with mattresses, mosquito nets, blankets, chairs and bedside tables. An upgrade of the mothers’ shelter would help more than 120 women each month and over 1440 women annually.

We need your help to empower the girls and women in Nyawa. Any donation is highly appreciated!
