My name is Richard (Rick) Bacher. I will be 85 years old on June 1st, 2018.
Until Christmas, 2017 I was working daily and year-round as a substitute teacher and was able to support myself in the local economy. I have been working in the school system for 26 years, so just about everywhere I go, I run into my former students; even some of the nurses at the hospital: Ha!
Substitutes are paid on a basis of days worked, but the job does not include benefits.
Some months ago I was diagnosed with prescription-drug induced pancreatitis with other complications, which finally led to a recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Except for days devoted to medical procedures, I was able to continue working every day right up until Christmas, but a 60 pound weight loss, three weeks of pneumonia, and numerous invasive medical procedures have left me weak to the point that I have only been able to work 2 days so far this year.
Faced with a greatly reduced income and rising expenses, I have little choice other than to seek the help of others.
I am not fearful of the cancer, nor am I afraid of death. I’m still in high spirits, thanks to wonderful friends and associates who have been very supportive. Since I am alone, I just want to avoid becoming a burden to anyone. If I can remain relatively independent as this odyssey plays itself out, I will remain content with my life. I believe in God, and am thankful for all the blessings that have been given me throughout these many years.
