In the early days of film making and television, whenever a scene called for the setting of an amusement park, chances are we'd end up at The Pike in Long Beach with the infamous Cyclone Racer roller coaster.
From comedies starring Eddie Cantor, Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, to thrillers like 1953's "The Beast From 20000 Fathoms", The Cyclone Racer was Long Beach's star attraction from 1930 to 1968.
Memorializing what was once billed as "The World's Greatest Ride" involves translating images from those films and photos and reconstructing a minature 3D version of the roller coaster. There will be places on the model where you can find a scene reenactment from a particular movie.
It is hoped I will have the entire project complete by 9/15/18, the 50th anniversary of the last day of Cyclone Racer's operation.
The Fred Church-designed Cyclone Racer was an all-wood duel-tracked triple stacked roller coaster that stood on a pier out over the water. As the years went on, a beach expansion replaced the water under the pier with sand and in 1967 the Queen Mary was brought into the area. The Cyclone Racer was torm down in 1968. The Pike closed 11 years later.
