Mark Allen Karn, of Yakima Washington, recently
passed away on November 6th, around 5 pm at Regional Hospital in Yakima Washington.
Mark had suffered a stroke on October 18th and was flown from Virginia Mason Memorial in Yakima Washington to Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle Washington. Where he began recovery under the care of medical staff over a duration of two weeks.
During Mark's stay at Virginia Mason, his discharge was repeatedly pushed back due to inadequate coverage of healthcare insurance.
Mark was a United States Navy veteran and had been covered by the VA for 20 odd years. After this recent health scare, Mark and his wife Angie discovered that the VA was no longer going offer Mark healthcare coverage.
Angie spent countless hours working with social workers within Virginia Mason and elsewhere to find a way to have Mark's medical expenses covered and to bring him home to continue his rehabilitation.
This situation with healthcare arose as the company Mark was employed with was in a limbo stage between health care insurers for their employees.
As the VA had been an option in the past Mark and Angie thought they had a safety net. With that safety net pulled out from under them, they had nowhere to turn.
Through hard work on behalf of both parties, the hospital and family came to an agreement. Mark was then discharged from Virginia Mason in Seattle on Friday, November 3rd.
In the early hours of Saturday, November 4th, Mark fell into cardiac arrest while sleeping. His wife, Angie, awoke to find that Mark was unconscious and not breathing. She called EMS, while Mark and Angie's son, Orion, administered CPR until EMS arrived.
On the drive to the hospital and after receiving a CT scan Mark experienced two more episodes of cardiac arrest both of which required resuscitation. After receiving, a maximum amount of adrenaline and medication Mark was put on life support as the doctors and nurses struggled to stabilize his heart and blood pressure.
Mark remained in the ICU on life support for 48 hours. The doctors detected extensive brain damage as a result of time spent lacking oxygen. The damage had reduced Mark's brain to the most primitive functions and his body was fully reliant on life support. The doctor advised the family that Mark would not improve and that he would never again be the man the family had known and loved over the 58 years of his life.
The family had to make the decision to withdraw life-support and let go of their son, husband, and father.
On November 6th, 15 minutes after life support was relieved, Mark went to join his Heavenly Father.
The outstanding medical bills that need to be paid are numerous, among them is a bill $100,000+ for the airlift that moved Mark from Yakima Washington to Seattle Washington for better urgent medical care, the long-term care Mark received while at Virginia Mason Hospital, the medication, and life support
required to sustain Mark in his final hours.
