Our mission at ROOTS Medtech CIC (Cambridge, UK) is to help ensure medical devices are accessible to all, including those who live in some of the most challenging and harsh socio-economic environments. In Africa alone, UN officials have said that it is likely the COVID-19 pandemic will kill at least 300,000 people. The WHO has highlighted the lack of ventilators being a serious concern.
We want to provide people and healthcare teams in low- and middle-income countries access to an affordable, robust, and a safe ventilator.
It’s tough in the UK, US and Europe, but imagine living somewhere where access to a ventilator simply isn’t an option, or where your ventilator stops working because the electricity fails or the ventilator breaks down. In Africa alone (with a population of around 1.3 billion), more than a third of the population lacks adequate water supplies and 60% of urban dwellers are living in dense housing without proper sanitation. Once COVID-19 really takes hold there, the consequences are likely to be catastrophic.
What are we doing to address the problem?
We have teamed up with the experts at LungFish Dive Systems, who develop market leading diving equipment. Lungfish have developed something very unique – a cost effective, light weight, robust, gas-powered ventilator system and the best part is, it does not require any electricity to work! We showed their prototype to senior clinicians and engineers, who have worked in low resource settings, and they have given it the thumbs up. We will be working with Marble Product Development (an ISO 13485 accredited company) to now Design For Manufacture.
What will our donations be used for?
We urgently need donations to help us refine the Lungfish ventilator system ready for manufacture and regulatory approval across Africa and beyond (within our 6 week project plan). Money is being raised for the design, development, testing and regulatory submission of the Lungfish ventilator. Any money raised above £250,000 will go towards the manufacture and shipment of the ventilators.
If we don't raise the full £250,000 for the development, fear not your money will not go to waste! Your donations are being kept until the full £250,000 is raised, and if it isn't then your money will go towards purchasing and shipment of other CE-marked ventilators to equipped clinics in Nigeria.
ROOTS Medtech Ltd is converting to a community interest company, and will be renamed “ROOTS Medtech C.I.C.”. This ensures ROOTS Medtech is a not-for-profit company for community rather than private benefit, with an independent regulator. ROOTS Medtech has completed the legal paperwork for this conversion, and its status will be updated on the Register of Companies once this has been processed by Companies House and the CIC Regulator.
