The Lough Ree 32k Challenge

Donation protected

On Wednesday 25th August, Serena Friel and Karen Reynolds completed a 32km relay swim from Lanesboro bridge to Athlone town
bridge,  to raise funds for the new Lough Ree RNLI Lifeboat Station in Coosan Point.

While we expected the 32km swim to take 12 hours plus to complete, the weather, good fortune, the hard work in training and super
swimming meant they finished the swim in 10 hours and 13 minutes.

The Swim was completed under Cross Challenge Swim Rules which meant the swimmers couldn't be assisted  and were only permitted to use goggles, a cap, and normal swimming togs.

The girls received fantastic support in the lead up to and on the swim from Lough Ree's RNLI crew and volunteers to ensure their safety
and wellbeing on the day and it's great to know that these people are available to help and safeguard boaters, swimmers, fishermen and all
other lake users  24/7 365 days a year.

They are one of Ireland’s busiest lifeboat crews and the  move to the new base  will help them to continue to save lives and promote water
safety on Lough Ree.  The RNLI is a charity and funded by donations and the local RNLI crew are trying to raise €100,000 towards the overall cost of this new building.
