The LearnBox Project
Donation protected
The LearnBox is an open-source all-in-one eLearning solution designed for places where power and the internet are not always available. We are raising money to distribute 100 devices to 100 rural schools in Rwanda.
My Story
From 2016 to 2017, I was a Peace Corps Response volunteer in Ngoma, Rwanda. I volunteered to help a rural polytechnic build a student information system. While there, I saw the need for low-cost technologies that solved local challenges. When I returned I started designing a solution. In 2019 I designed the LearnBox and in 2020 we started testing it in Rwanda.
Local Partnerships
From the beginning we knew that collaboration would be key to the successful adoption of the LearnBox. During the design phase, we sought out local experts to continuously advise us in order to ensure that the solution would be appropriate for the local context. We continuing this philosophy into the pilot phase, where we are partnering with local EdTech startup SmartClass, Rwanda Polytechnic, and Peace Corps Rwanda. These partnerships will help us increase capacity, improve local communication, and further refine the LearnBox’s features.
Budget Breakdown:
100 Devices @ $100.00 each = $10,000
Shipping and local delivery in Rwanda = $6,000
Import taxes and fees = $4,000
Local training and one year of support services = $10,000
Administrative costs = $3,000
Total: $33,000
