The Last Tropical Glaciers

“In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand and we will understand only what we are taught.
Baba Douim, Senegalese Environmentalist, 1968

The Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) describes education as one of the best solutions to improve climate literacy, enabling climate action and adaptation.

Today, new educational technologies can create immersive learning experiences available to all and have the potential to revolutionize the way we teach, learn, and bridge the knowledge-action gap.

This project aims to create a series of educational, immersive videos filmed in the fastest-changing environments on Earth: the last tropical glaciers.

We are making climate science accessible to all, and bringing glaciers into classrooms, living rooms and boardrooms through the use of VR.

Glaciers, in the Tropics?!

Today, the few glaciers that are found in the Tropical regions are losing their fight against climate change. In less than a decade, most of these glaciers will be gone.

Why shall we care about these glaciers?

For their water resources used for drinking, irrigation, sanitation, and the production of hydroelectricity.

The micro-climates surrounding the glaciers protect populations from tropical diseases.

The ice from the glaciers protects rare data on past climates.

Highly specialized ecosystems depend upon the water from the glaciers.

Tropical glaciers attract high numbers of tourists every year.

Finally, traditions and belief systems are associated with these glaciers.

Time is running out. These glaciers give us an insight into what all the glaciers on earth could become if we do not act now.

Our next expedition:

In January 2021 we will travel to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda. These jaw-dropping landscapes are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their Universally Outstanding Value. These mountains are still home to some of the last glaciers of East Africa, and are bound to disappear within the next 5 years. By capturing these environments in 360° we will make them accessible to everyone for eternity.

These glaciers are unique in so many ways. They are considered to be the highest and most permanent source of the Nile River, and their micro-climates have created rich ecosystems inhabited by hundreds of endemic species.
