100% of your donations will be go to a children's music program in the Hamilton Wentworth District in memory of Josiah Ryan. All money will be accounted for with total transparency. Josiah, a 27 year old man, ended his life by suicide on June 18th, 2017. He was an avid musician and had been accepted to Barber School. He had many talents and was loved by all. The sheer devastation that his death has caused is immeasurable. A good deed in his name would make this loss more tolerable.
Although he is cherished and missed by many, he often felt alone and misunderstood. He struggled with mental illness since his teen years, like so many Canadians and people abroad. We know that mental health diagnoses are often associated with a higher rate of suicide. Suicide is a very real problem in Hamilton that is weaving its way into people's homes uninvited.
A good saying is "it is better to build a child then fix an adult" and it is with this mentality and with hope, that we want to invest in children less fortunate in our own community. Music brightens child development, promotes skills for school readiness, intellectually, socially and emotionally. It helps the body and the mind work together. What better way to 'build a child' and prevent future mental illness through music.
Josiah would be happy to know that his legacy lives on in music.
