Jamaica Crisis Relief Fund – Standing Together After the Devastation of Hurricane Melissa
On October 28, Hurricane Melissa — a Category Five storm and the strongest ever recorded — slammed into west and central Jamaica, leaving behind a level of destruction that is almost impossible to put into words.
More than 30 people have tragically lost their lives, and many more families remain unaccounted for.
The storm ripped through communities, shattered homes, destroyed crops, tore up roads, and left entire towns cut off from the world. Among the hardest hit was Black River in St Elizabeth, where even the hospital was destroyed, leaving residents without medical care at a time when they need it the most.
Aerial views show Black River swallowed by water — the streets, the livelihoods, the very heartbeat of the community washed away in a matter of hours.
This is not just a natural disaster.
This is a humanitarian crisis.
And the people of Jamaica desperately need our love, compassion, and support.
Lives Uprooted, Communities Cut Off
Across the island, as many as 30 communities remain isolated, their roads and bridges destroyed. The crisis is worsened by severe shortages of:
- Helicopters to reach remote families
- Social workers
- Doctors and nurses
- Engineers needed for urgent rebuilding
As Jamaica struggles to clear the debris and reconnect its people, thousands are left without food, clean water, shelter, or medical care. Families who survived the storm now face the harsh reality of rebuilding with almost nothing.

Community Leaders Uniting for Jamaica
This effort has been proudly launched by:
Karl Samuels - The Heritage Centre Operations Director
Alicia Spence - Director ACCI
Sandra Samuels OBE DL - Former councillor and Mayor of Wolverhampton
Alicia shared:
“We already knew about the terrible devastation caused by the hurricane, especially in communities that were hit by another dangerous storm just last year.
In response, we are holding a fundraising dance and collecting dry food and torches which will be transported to the people affected. We won’t be accepting clothing.
We will also be leaving collection boxes at shops in the area.”
And many more local voices — including Kay Hinton, sister of Sir Lenny Henry — are urging the people of the West Midlands to give generously and help Jamaica begin to heal.
Why We Have Launched This GoFundMe
The Heritage Centre has always been a place where Caribbean heritage lives, where community thrives, and where love is shared in difficult times.
We cannot rebuild Jamaica alone.
But together — with compassion, unity, and action — we can bring relief to those who are suffering the most.
The funds raised will help purchase emergency supplies, support delivery to the worst affected areas, and assist communities in rebuilding their homes and their futures.
When people lose everything, the smallest act of kindness can restore hope.
