Daniel's Fundraiser

Daniel Guillen is an 11th grader at the Early College of Arvada. Like many of his peers he has dreams of graduating high school and attending college. While still unsure of what career path to choose, he is excited to explore all available options. Math is his favorite subject, though he still can't decide which teacher is his favorite because he loves all of them. This is almost his last year of high school and while this school year looks different for everyone, it has been altered even more drastically for Daniel.

On August 4th, he was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a soft tissue cancer, that damaged his nerve on his right eye making him lose the ability to see clearly. Tumors have grown in his neck, and nasal canal causing him to lose sense of smell. Daniel has been receiving chemotherapy treatment since August 13th. He receives radiation every day and must attend 36 treatment sessions each week.

Since receiving a diagnosis his mother, Claudia, sprung into action to care for Daniel in addition to her three other children. Unfortunately, her attentiveness came at a cost and Claudia needed to quit her job in order to make sure Daniel received the care he needed. Nevertheless, she has not left Daniel’s side and the Guillen family is coming together to take care of each other and bills (mortgage, electricity, car payment, insurance, food/utilities).

Coping with job loss is difficult. Coping with job loss in an already struggling economy means that putting money toward anything unrelated to medical bills is pretty much out of the question. Many of us have seen the economic devastation faced by members of our own community and people all over the country. A battle with cancer is difficult without a global pandemic that places greater strain on people like Daniel. That is why ECA is putting together a coordinated effort to raise funding for the Guillen family during this heightened time of crisis. ECA griffin families are strong and resilient; we take care of eachother. The Early College of Arvada is asking for donations to help lighten the burden faced by the Guillen family.

When Daniel beats this, he is looking forward to getting back to school, hanging out with friends, and doing other things he loves like jogging at the nearby park because of the view of the sunset.
