The Grass Is Dead Tour Van

"Hello friends and future friends! If you don’t know us, we’re The Grass Is Dead, a bluegrass quintet paying homage to the music and cultural legacy of The Grateful Dead and we are so proud to represent their music as a grassified/psychedelic string band. Its been a long, strange trip from when we began in 1998, but in the last year alone we have been touring from the Rockies to the Maine Coast, from Chicago to Miami, and all points in between. We’ve made so many friends along the way, and are so grateful to have such amazing fans, and now we are hoping you can support us a little more, as the time has come to upgrade to a new touring vehicle.” ~ Billy, Jon, Jared, Steve & Brian

Led by banjo virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist Billy Gilmore, The Grass Is Dead was formed in 1998, and have established themselves far and wide as premiere purveyors of two rich traditions of Americana music: bluegrass and The Grateful Dead, who are arguably America’s first folk rock band and one of the most influential musical artists of the last 50 years. The members of The Grass Is Dead met at Spirit of The Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, FL, and developed a friendship over their shared love for the Grateful Dead and bluegrass music. They released 3 albums in the early 2000's that were officially recognized by The Grateful Dead and sold by GD merchandising at many shows, and the band achieved a degree of national recognition, even though their tour dates in the early years kept them close to their home base of South Florida. In 2017 The Grass Is Dead went all in, and are now touring extensively with the help of professional representation and are growing and burnishing a strong national profile. With new live shows streaming, collaborations with the likes of David Gans and the Rev. Jeff Mosier, and dates booked all the way through June of 2018 in from the Rockies to the Atlantic, The Grass Is Dead are poised to make what was once just a dream of a few friends 20 years ago into a reality. To spread the JOY of music and to lift up all those who find solace in the celebration of timeless songs like these is a goal worth achieving and they need your help.
Your generosity will go towards the purchase of a road worthy vehicle. All donations, no matter how small, will help us tremendously. THANK YOU

"At the core of The Grateful Dead is the heart of American music, which is bluegrass and folk. You cannot hide behind these two genres. What you get in the studio is what you get onstage. And it's that vulnerability and honesty that sets the tone and attitude apart from the haphazard and polished nature of pop radio. Putting their music through the prism of string music, The Grass Is Dead showcase how Jerry & Co. buried innumerable gems of wisdom — sonically and spiritually — in the rich tapestry of their melodies and lyrics, all of which radiates in intimacy and inclusiveness of The Grass Is Dead when they stand in front of the microphone, and also the unknown night of curiosity and exploration that they seek out and grasp with such ease."
— Garret K. Woodward, Music Editor - The Smoky Mountain News

“I have made music with Billy Gilmore off and on for more than 15 years. He is a sensitive and expressive musician with a great attitude.”
— David Gans-Musician /Host of the Grateful Dead Hour Radio and co-host of SiriusXM Grateful Dead Channel
