The gift of sight for Brynn!

I remember when I first heard that a little girl with ocular albinism was going to be in my class. Excited for a new challenge, but fearful that I wouldn’t be able to live up to the expectations and needs that Brynn or her family needed. Thoughts that crossed my mind: Would I be able to keep her safe? How will the others children treat her? How can I help this little 2 year old adjust to school with ease? Will I remember the sunscreen, sunglasses and hat?!
I told her mother, Jamie, that she was brave. I didn’t go in-depth with her, but I meant that she was brave to let go and let her little girl into the world. Brave to face the challenges of Brynn’s future. Brave to know that life isn’t always easy, maybe more so, for someone with a disability.
Jamie looked at me and said “I’m not brave. I want Brynn to be independent and to have the experiences
and opportunities that any child has.” As the weeks went by, I found my concerns turned into amazement. Amazed that within a short amount of time, 7 other little two and three year olds developed very strong bonds with Brynn. It was fun watching them take over my role saying “Brynny watch your step!” “Be careful Brynny” and help her up when she would stumble. Amazed, that she loved listening, exploring and trying to see everything that each new school day brought. Amazed, that I remembered the sunscreen!
My fears grew into excitement. As I got to know the Jones family, I can see where Brynn gets her determination and confidence. Brynn’s future is bright. She will go to college, become a Delta Gamma sorority sister like her mom, and her hopes and dreams will become reality.
One device that would make a major impact on Brynn and her future is electronic eyewear from eSight 3. This one device would change the way she sees the world. She would be able to see the fine lines on a flower petal, words on a page and her mom, dad and brother’s faces.
Because this device is so costly, I decided to start this adventure to raise money for this little girl’s sight.
Brynn was diagnosed with oculocutaneous albinism when she was one month old. She has beautiful white hair and crystal blue eyes- the "norm" for an individual with albinism. It is important for her to avoid sun damage to the skin and eyes by taking precautions such as wearing sunblock, hats and sunglasses at all times when outdoors. As she has gotten older, she has seen numerous low vision specialists. The most recent giving her a 20/240 visual acuity. (A person is considered legally blind at 20/200). She also has nystagumus (involuntary eye movement) which we can see, however her brain corrects the movement and her view of the world is not always moving as her eyes are. Her vision may slightly improve as she gets older, however, even with possible surgeries, she will never have near perfect vision.
eSight is am amazing technological breakthrough- electronic glasses that let the legally blind actually see. eSight is a unique wearable medical device that enhances the finctional vision of a person who has low vision or is legally blind.
