The Geri Garcia Stroke Benefit Fund

Donation protected
We are raising money to help our mother, Geri, reach her greatest potential in her stroke recover.  Near the end of July our mother was taken to the hospital and dismissed with a generic response of her running out of a particular medication, which was why she was experiencing the symptoms she was displaying.  A couple days later she returned to the hospital for the same symptoms, only stronger this time.  She had a CT scan that showed several mini strokes, and it was found that she had 100% blockage in her carotid artery, and a couple other blockages at 70% and 80%, respectively.  Surgery was performed to clear the blockage of the carotid artery, and that surgery went well with mom cleared to start therapy for stroke rehab.  Four days after the surgery, she became unresponsive during a normal conversation with a family member at the hospital, so she was rushed in for an emergency CT scan where a major hemorrhage was found, and mom was rushed in for emergency surgery for a hemorrhagic stroke.  Part of her skull was removed to make room for the swelling of the brain, and 10 hours later she was rushed in for a second emergency surgery to remove a blood clot that developed on the speech portion of her brain.  A few weeks later, she celebrated her 60th birthday in the hospital.

Geri has suffered great physical loss, with the left side of her body losing most of it's function.  Mom is left handed, and left side dominant, so she is having to adjust to life without function of her dominate side.  Physical therapy has begun and there have been signs of life in her leg, and we remain hopeful that she will regain the ability to walk.  She is also in speech therapy to begin re-learning how to communicate, which there have been positive signs that we will regain effective communication with mom, and she's also in occupational therapy to help her regain some independence with daily living, hygiene and getting herself dressed.

During the stroke recovery phase, we've realized how many needs mom has and the changes to our homes that need to be made to accommodate a person with significant handicaps.  Mom will never be able to live on her own again, and we will tackle this as a family unit to give mom the best care possible, but in order to make that happen, we sincerely ask that you consider making donation to Geri, the matriarch of our family, so we can provide her the best care possible.  There will be significant remodeling that will need to be done, including a bathroom, widening doorways, and a stair lift.  Our target remodel budget $6,000.00.  Mom also needs a custom prosthetic leg brace to help her learn how to walk again, which is $900.00 and is not covered by insurance.  We will have countless other pieces of medical equipment to buy that will require further funding as well.  She is living in a nursing home right now because our houses are not equipped to bring her home yet, so we need funding to make that happen.  We cannot do this on our own, and we need your financial support to help mom reach her fullest potential.  In all sincerity, thank you so much for considering a donation to Geri; we will be forever grateful for your love and support!
