The Future starts Today

The Future begins today......

Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA), is a registered no-kill shelter (206 A/D) based in Beirut, Lebanon, where some dogs have been with us since 2006 when our major rescue operations started, and we are writing to you today to ask for your help. BETA is also registered, as of September 12th, 2018, in Illinois - USA.

On September 5th, 2018, we received an eviction notice, and we are being kicked out of the land we are occupying in a couple of months, but thankfully, for the past six years, we have been working on getting a permit for a new shelter, and we finally have all the paperwork ready from the different ministries involved.

Since BETA’s inception, we have rescued over 5,200 pets (mainly dogs and cats), rescued, relocated/released 25 wild animals and re-homed over 2,950 pets, and currently the shelter is the home of around 800 dogs and 200 cats – in separate locations – in addition to horses, vervets, birds, guinea pigs, rabbits

In this part of the world which faces constant unrest and political turmoil, we are working against all odds to help the animals who are still seen as commodities, and to add insult to injury, we are being sued and 800 shelter dogs currently face the possibility of being homeless again!

In 2006, the war ravaged the shelter that we were operating, forcing us to relocate to an abandoned pig farm, and with very limited resources, we renovated, repaired and restored the place to adapt it to 150 dogs. Over the years, the number of dogs fostered grew, as we couldn’t turn a blind eye to the mistreated and abandoned.

Here we are, 13 years later, with a shelter caring for 800 rescue dogs.  The current shelter is far from optimal as dogs are not protected from harsh weather – heat or cold, the roofs sag, leak and sometimes even collapse.   The 150 cats are similarly in desperate need of help, living in an apartment transformed into a shelter.

The new shelter will be designed in accordance with international standards and built to protect from the heat and the cold, which is a luxury at the current shelter. It will also facilitate adoption procedures, be environment-friendly (and include solar panels), and accommodate horses in a stable and monkeys in a small sanctuary that imitates their environment, not to forget about the injured birds who will have an aviary with birdhouses by the time they are healed and released in their natural habitat.

But building a shelter involves a lot of hard work and resources that we currently do not have, and your help is essential for the fate of more than 1,000 animals.

The construction of the new shelter’s first phase is estimated at $150,000.

The first phase will consist of the following:

Setting up the construction site, clearing from shrubs etc..
Construction insurance ,
Earthwork
Building stone load-load bearing walls,
Plumbing work for the water and waste drainage,
Fencing the whole perimeter.

Any help of yours would be much appreciated and even the smallest donations do make a difference, and of course, we are happy to provide you with any information, photos/videos or documents needed.

Our dogs and other animals have been through the unimaginable (shot, abused, dragged by cars, suffered from horrible skin problems on the streets and the list is too long…) and we cannot let them down now after everything they faced and after knowing the shelter as their haven.

Let’s build them a shelter. Let’s build them a home.
Please help us change their fate and provide them with the decent life they deserve.
