Students from the University of The Arts London Tackle climate crisis!

The Ebb Tide is a short melancholic film set in a dystopian wasteland which is strewn with plastic waste. Here, a disheveled man lives in perpetual isolation - until one day, a woman is washed ashore and his world as he knows it is changed forever.

Getting us back to the Wasteland

Due to unpredictable weather conditions, 'Storm Dennis' forced our shoot to a standstill. Despite our hardest efforts to fight back, mother nature was truly working against us.

Storm Dennis was one of the most intense cyclones ever recorded in Europe. With strong windstorms above 40mph, we were unable to shoot, subsequently returning to London with only half our scenes.

                                                                    The World

‘The characteristics of this lost and wasted environment are integral to the plot, and the characters are also are very much a part of the waste ridden scenery, so when conceptualising my designs I am attempting to create a harmonious visual style that not only satisfies the needs of the script but also adds a texture and depth to the storyline’ - Lily Huang, Production Designer, and writer.

                                                                     Our Ethos

The story encapsulates fear, hope, and the human condition; but the one theme we’d particularly like to highlight is that of environmental degradation, which is crucially relevant in today’s world as well as our story. We have sustainability and climate awareness at the heart of our entire production process!

We will be the first production from our university to focus on minimizing our production carbon footprint, which is very exciting and important to us, considering the nature of our current climate and the world of our film. This is certainly a huge creative challenge for our team but one we are ready to embark upon; we hope that our film will in some way evoke our audience's response to our planet’s current environmental crisis.

                                                                      Our Team

Our team has recently undergone BAFTA Albert training, which is a carbon literacy course in sustainability. We are focusing on offsetting and lowering our production’s carbon footprint to achieve full certification. We have also gained financial support from the charity ‘Change Agents UK’ who subsidise sustainable projects run by young people.

Through the Albert+ website and case studies, the team has been able to create our own production 'Green Goals'. Some of our goals include; Purchasing pre-loved materials, no single-use plastics on set and using rechargeable batteries for all our equipment.

                                                                     Our Budget

The funds previously raised ensured our production team had eco-friendly materials to create their ambitious set designs. Alongside this, we are able to prepare and ensure the recycling and disposing of our set, once the production is finished. Our bigger travel and transport budget allowed us to cover the costs of train tickets for the entire cast and crew.

Getting us back to the Wasteland

Help us get each crew member back to the beach! Just £25 can transport a member of our team to the location via shared transport, subsequently lowering our carbon footprint, costing and polluting less then traveling by car.

The rest of our funding will be going towards accommodation for the night, as well as feeding our hungry crew and cast after hard days shooting.

The money you donate will allow us to repair and rebuild the damages our set/structure faced from the storm.

Storm Dennis was a European windstorm which, in February 2020, became one of the most intense extratropical cyclones ever recorded. The effects of storm Dennis have been devastating for us, as we had high hopes for reasonable weather conditions after researching and planning our trip for so long. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, we need to return to Camber Sands and complete our film,

                                                                     Thank you!

We are a team of student film-makers creating our most important film yet whilst also trying to do something a bit different. We want to lead the way in our university and industry by putting sustainability at the heart of our film-making. However, we are aware that it ends up costing more to waste less.

Due to the harsh weather conditions, our shoot was cut short. We desperately trying to raise enough funds to get our crew back to the beach and finish our film, and you can help us achieve this?

We are extremely grateful for any donation no matter how big or how small! However, if you are unable to support us financially please share our page and help us get back to the beach.

We would also like to thank the charity ‘Change Agents UK’ for supporting and believing in our production! Helping our film become a reality.
