The DOTtED Clementine

The DOTtED Clementine

My name is Sydney Goushas and I have been a teacher for the past four years in the Chicago suburbs. I love what I do and could not be happier with the career
path that I have chosen for myself. However, the way that this past school year has ended and thinking about this school year to come has been a very difficult thing for me (as it has been for all teachers). My students and I this year were able to make a brand-new way of learning a positive experience but if I was secretly struggling, I could only help but think about how hard it must have been for my students.

During this difficult time in the world I have thought about ways I can personally help educate, teach, and inspire students to continue to grow and have fun with their learning at this time. While I have been a teacher on summer break trapped in ways of how to safely spend my summer, I keep constantly thinking back to my students. I have always dreamed of turning a school bus into a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning environment on wheels and I feel as though there will never be a better time for me to prepare to make this dream a reality. My dream is to transform a school bus into a classroom and create a safe and tactile learning environment for kids to explore, create, and inspire each other with the support of their peers. Not only do I want to help communities out by providing a fun learning environment when parents have to work but I want to make sure students are continuing their learning experience the best way they know how - through experiential learning in a modified classroom. Whether it’s a summer or weekend event the goal is to drive this bus to Chicagoland neighborhoods/ communities and
teach students outdoors in small groups that follow CDC guidelines.

While times right now are tough for everyone, as a teacher going back to school this year just doesn’t sit right. While trying to make remote learning as normal as possible, I am also striving to make the moment we can be back together better than ever. I am trying to show my students that even in the toughest/darkest times, you should keep believing in your dreams. I am waiting and striving for the day I can be back with my students and in the mean time I will be creating something worth waiting for.

This summer I was overwhelmed with gratitude from the amount of help and support that was given to me from the community towards this project and I am excited to say I found a bus!! Any donations of school supplies or funds will help with the purchase and transformation of the bus as well as teaching materials AND sanitation products. If you’re interested in helping out with this project or learning more, please message me!
