The Dogs of Romania

Two months ago, I began working at a dog shelter called Dogs Walk This Way, bringing dogs over from Romania. My mum, Sam, said to me, “that’s great Emily! But, we are not having another dog!” On top of our gorgeous Bear! So naturally, one month and 3 weeks later, Betsy, our roughly, 4 month old puppy came home! (Picture attached) 

Romania, unfortunately, has a very large street dog population. Due to this, there are many places known as ‘kill shelters’ where dogs are captured, and sold to these ‘shelters’ and if they cannot be sold again, well, then they live up to their names. 
as awful as that is, there are other places, called freedom shelters, where dogs are saved and held there until they can be re-homed in other countries. 

Dogs Walk This Way, is a non profit organisation that brings dogs over, rehabilitates them and re homes them. Providing vital social interaction, veterinary access and love. They do what they can with what they have and have made the lives of hundreds of dogs and families, so much happier. 

As mentioned earlier, we now have our gorgeous Betsy, who was abandoned in a bag, on the side of a road as a young puppy. She was found, brought to the freedom shelter and then brought over to England as soon as it was definite she has passed 4 months. Her horrendous start may have made her slightly unsure of sounds and other people, but she is a diva at home! Runs laps around our big Labrador, Bear, who is still questioning why she’s still here, but is being such a good brother! She sings to music, loves her toys and believes stealing the washing and sprinting back to her bed is the best game in the world. She will only know love, whilst so many others won’t. 

My mum has decided to run 3 marathons a week during lockdown, to raise the amount of money, equivalent to the trip from Romania to England, £1558, I have also agreed to split it with her, so between us will run (for me walk probably!) 78 miles a week, that’s 312 miles in total and We are asking for whatever we can to help the shelter.
