The Demkos Need Your Help

This is a picture of Tasha and I, back when we were both happy. We lived in Tampa, we had tons of friends we connected with regularly, and we felt like our lives were good.

Flash forward 4 years. We've moved to Port Richey, don't get to connect with our friends nearly as often, and most importantly, our debt has been piling up for a number of reasons. We've both fallen into a deep depression, and we feel crushed under everything right now.

It all started when we made a poor decision last year, to try and refinance our home. The 3rd party company informed us that our next 2 months of mortgage payments would be paid on our behalf, during the transition of the re-fi. We stupidly started using some of the money we owed for mortgage to help pay down some other bills, and the 3rd party company pulled out of the contract, leaving us nearly 2 months behind on the mortgage.

Shortly thereafter, Tasha got fired from her job. She's been working hard to start a business with her best friend, but as with all new businesses, this has not brought home any significant income yet. I thought we could just conserve costs from time to time, until the business started profiting.

I was hit in a car accident in March, which ended up piling up a lot of medical bills we just can't pay right now. The guy who hit me was completely uninsured, and our 'uninsured motorist' coverage had been canceled a few years back. My old car was totaled out, and we got very little for it, so now I'm driving a 1995 Toyota Camry (with $168/month car payments on a 1-year loan).

Unexpectedly, I was laid off from my job on Nov 1st, due to department cuts. I was given a high recommendation for any future employer, and I felt like my chances of getting employed quickly were decent. I didn't panic, but we obviously had to start looking into directions to make sure our bills are being paid. I've been through a few interviews, and continue being contacted by tech recruiters. So there is interest in my skillset, and it's entirely possible that I will be employed by the time this GoFundMe runs out. If so, I will cancel this campaign immediately and return all funds.

On top of all that, though, we are also having to deal with being too far behind on our mortgage to continue living here. I've applied for assistance from the Florida Hardest Hit fund, and we're waiting for their decision. I am collecting unemployment, but with their max weekly cap on earnings, my pay is basically being cut to 1/4 of what I was making. We are about $6000 behind on mortgage payments at the moment, but I wouldn't consider asking for that sort of amount because I'm confident we'll be able to receive aid from the FHHF.

We need money to be able to keep paying our bills. We will be cutting all unnecessary services and costs, and basically given up any social activities, unless something free comes along. We have to cover the costs of gas, food, electricity, cellphones, my car payment, car insurance, our monthly debt-relief payment, and internet. I have calculated our bills from now until the end of January, and we can survive with about $3000. I am optimistic that I will be re-employed before the end of January.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you we're victims of anything. We've simply fallen on hard times, some because of poor decisions I've made, but also due to just plain bad luck. We're trying to recover, but when you're so panicked over where you're going to live next month, it's hard not to fall into paralyzing depression. Please help us, if you can. Pass this campaign on to other people. We miss living semi-normal lives, living paycheck to paycheck. If we can even get back to that, we would be more grateful than you can imagine.
