October 4th, 2021 will mark 10 years since the passing of the native of Eastern North Carolina, David Payton. In honor of his name and vision, the David T. Payton Foundation was formed by his youngest daughter, Terri Campbell- Payton to take a stand for preserving the arts culture in Greenville, NC. The David T. Payton Foundation raises awareness by providing funding, education, and resources for the Greenville, NC art district on Albemarle Avenue, and West Fifth Street. The late David Payton is a name that cannot be forgotten in the home in Greenville, NC and Eastern NC. He has contributed his whole life to changing lives through the works of African American Off-Broadway productions. Not only is he remembered locally, but on a national scale. The daughter of David Payton, Terri Campbell- Payton is working to bring awareness historically to the formally known “Roxy Theatre” into renaming the theatre in her father’s name as The David T. Payton Auditorium. Signing the Greenville Arts District petition today will take a stand with the future of urban arts and preserving the culture in Greenville, NC.
The David T. Payton Foundation is raising funds to provide for the Not-for-Profit organization and program, The Greenville Theatre Arts Center. The foundation has a vision for the future look of the arts district in Greenville, NC. The formally known “Roxy Theatre” touches on a lot of history and background within Greenville and the Arts culture in the urban community. Terri Campbell- Payton wants to help bring the history back to the forefront by historically preserving the theatre so that it can not only shed light of what the theatre was fifty years ago, but what the theatre means for the community presently and what the theatre can bring moving forward. The David T. Payton Foundation honors and remembers David Payton and all of his works. The foundation continues to provide for The Greenville Theatre Arts Center, raise awareness for The David T. Payton Auditorium, and prepare for the future David T. Payton Art Academy.
