The Cost of Two Lungs Part 2

Donation protected
Hi there. For those of you who don’t know Meghann Palmer (or Meggo as I so lovingly call her), she is 35 years old, is trained as a social worker, and is from Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada. Meghann would probably call herself “average” but she is anything but - she’s incredibly smart, funny, compassionate, fearless and a little bit stubborn. Meghann loves dogs, clothes, human rights, books and especially loves potato chips. But most importantly, Meghann is determined to make the world a better place and to make everyone around her feel loved, accepted and special.

What makes Meghann so amazing is the fact that she does all of this for so many people despite everything she is going through. And right now, Meghann is up against the fight of her life.

Meghann was diagnosed with a disease called Cystic Fibrosis (CF) when she was an infant. CF is a genetic disease that causes increased mucus in the body, but it’s primarily an illness that impacts her respiratory and digestive systems. In other words, Meghann battles chronic lung infections, sinus infections, and bowel blockages, among many other pains and ailments. She is frequently in an out of hospital and must spend hours a day doing treatments in order to function.

For 35 years, Meghann has fought to remain as healthy as she can. But all the treatments, hospitalizations and complications have taken a toll on her lungs - and they are finally giving out. To save Meghann’s life, she needs a double lung transplant.

Unfortunately, no hospital in the Maritime provinces can perform a double lung transplant. In February 2019, Meghann and her mom, Barb, were forced to move to Toronto in order to start preliminary treatment and get Meghann on the lifesaving transplant list. Although New Brunswick will cover the cost of the actual surgery and provide some money towards living expenses, the majority of everyday costs, including the cost of Toronto rent ($2000-3000/month), food and transportation, are not covered. Meghann and her family are forced to cover any additional expenses out of pocket, on top of all the expenses they need to cover at home in New Brunswick and without the ability for both Meghann and her mom to work. Because Meghann and her mom will be in Toronto for at least a year, they estimate they will need approximately $80,000 to cover all expenses needed to stay and save her life.

Meghann is my best friend and I, along with her family and her many friends, would be completely lost without her. Please consider a donation towards Meghann’s fund to help lessen her family’s financial burden and get her the double lung transplant she needs. Any amount, regardless of size, goes such a long way. If you can’t donate, please share her story and help us reach her goal.

If you prefer to e-transfer, please send to [email redacted].

Thank you for taking the time to read about my wonderful friend and helping me save Meghann’s life.
