The Continuous Line: Making Connections

Donation protected
My name is Renate Mairie. I am a multi-disciplinary artist whose predominate medium is printmaking. I conceived of The Continuous Line Printmakers Collective project in 2018 as a way to explore human connection through imagination and creative collaboration using the subconscious as a vehicle for dialogue.

This exquisite corpse* project began with one artist who created an 8.5 x 11 drawing... the edge of such drawing was passed along to a new participant who then responded with their own drawing. This process is repeated -continuously creating a long panoramic visual line of connection. Samples below are details of several drawings shown together. Participants will see their fellow artists' drawings for the first time through public exhibition.

I have over 50 participants' drawings to show. With exhibition dates scheduled for Spring of 2022, my goal is to convert each drawing to a 24"x36" print in order to display all drawings together continuously at a gallery with over 60 feet of wall space. It will be very exciting for viewers to see the transformation of their individual efforts into collaborative artwork at The Continuous Line: Making Connections exhibition. Funding to support this vision will require $2,200 to stage the show in an ideal large size format. All support will go toward the exhibition at the size that the funding raised allows.

Myself and a few other artists who have participated in this project will donate our time to print all of the converted drawings and piece them together into one long scroll for display. This project highlights printmaking as a diverse art form and promotes the community benefits of studio arts across the Front Range. Studio arts are an ideal format for outreach development, and I also hope this exhibition will encourage community members to engage their own creative vision by participating. Art is accessible to all and contributes to a sense of well-being that can be shared with everyone.

Thank you for your support!

*The inspiration for my project started years prior when I was studying the Surrealists as part of my Art History coursework. Exquisite Corpse was devised in 1925 by the Surrealists André Breton , Yves Tanguy , Jacques Prévert , and Marcel Duchamp during one of their habitual visits to Paris’s Rue du Château. Breton had founded the movement a year prior, formalizing it with his 1924 Surrealist Manifesto -calling for art that engaged the unconscious by using dreams and automatic drawings as creative fodder. One way of unlocking psychic space, according to Breton, was through games—and he and his cohort were constantly inventing them.
