In planning our 20th Wedding Anniversary to Haiti, never did we image that it would start and end within minutes of landing.  Resulting in physical, emotional injuries and tremendous medical expenses.  A year later, while being thankful for the life of such a great husband/dad/family member.  Wilson is scheduled for yet another surgery in the coming weeks and we could use your support.

Full details of events:

In planning our 20th Wedding Anniversary to Haiti, never did we imagine that it would start and end within minutes of us landing.  On November 19, 2018 my husband and I landed in Haiti and were looking forward to celebrating our lives together.  Within 30 minutes into the commute to Decameron resort, our transportation was blocked, men came out of the bushes, and soon shots were being fired.

With multiple people shot, the driver kept driving until he reached a police point.  An ambulance was called and the most critical patients were sent off.  During that time my husband and I didn’t realize he had been shot in the back.  In finally reaching the resort, he fainted and that is when we realized the gunshot wound.  At that point he was put in another ambulance and rushed to the hospital.

In reaching the hospital we were immediately asked for payment in cash for x-rays and other medical assistance.  Thankful there was a group of doctors from Canada that were able to assist with his care.

With the kidney damage and severity of the wound, it was advised that he get out of the country and back to the U.S. ASAP.  Within a couple of hours, we were on the phone with the US Embassy to coordinate medivac transportation back home.  The cost for medivac was $20K, thankfully our family was able to make the arrangements and pay for the expense.

The next challenge we faced was very discouraging as no hospitals wanted to accept our insurance therefore, we were scrambling to find a trauma one hospital that would accept us.  A doctor from Canada was able to call in a favor so we could go to a hospital in FL.

In an effort to ensure my husband’s blood and fluid wouldn’t clog, the Canadian doctors would take shifts caring for him.

In finally arriving to FL, we didn’t know what to expect but were hopeful.  My husband endured surgery and was in the hospital for two full weeks.  Our next challenge was to find a way to be transported from FL back home to NY.

Once home this traumatic event while over, was still taxing our lives as we needed to search for a trauma surgeon that was willing to handle my husband’s follow up care.  Additionally, the toll it has taken on us both physically, mentally, and emotionally; is one we hope to overcome but has been a great challenge.

A year later, Wilson is scheduled for another surgery as a result of his injuries.  While family and friends have been supportive and are truly grateful; the financial impact this tragedy has had to our family we could use your support in the coming weeks.

Wilson is scheduled for his surgery on December 5, 2019 and we’d welcome your support.
