The Chapmans need our Help

Attention donors! We have the following good news update! Tradewinds Heating & Cooling has agreed to donate the furnace and its complete installation in Pat Chapman's house. The work is already under way. However, the family has indicated that Pat will have some other homecare needs including but not limited to a chairlift to help her go up and down the stairs. So, any donations are still welcome for this new purpose. Thank you and Tradewinds for helping the Chapmans! The Chapman family, their friends and Pat's neighbors are very grateful for everyone's support! We have retained the original request for help as follows.

A long-time neighbor needs your help!  On September 25th, the San Rafael neighborhood lost a cherished neighbor, Bob Chapman, of 2013 Ogden Street.  You may have seen news coverage of this tragedy.  It is believed that Bob succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty furnace when it was re-started this Fall.  Firefighters responding to a 911 call found Bob unconscious and high levels of carbon monoxide in the home Bob and his wife, Patricia, have lived and raised a family in for approximately 40 years.  Pat was hospitalized but released later the same day.

Before moving into their current home, the Chapmans lived across the street at 2040 Ogden Street and all three of their grown children, John Sr., Vernettea and Charlotte, were born here in San Rafael.  Anyone spending much time on the 2000 block of Ogden Street knew Bob as a gentle, compassionate man always with a smile on his face and a greeting for his neighbors and passersby.  He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.  In recent years, Bob was a fixture on his front porch minding one or more of his grand or great-grandchildren as they played in the yard and up and down the sidewalk, brightening the neighborhood. Bob and Pat have seven grandchildren (two of whom preceded Bob in death) and 4 great-grands.

Robert Charles Chapman, 73, was born in Newton, Mississippi on November 11, 1943 and met his best friend and wife of 53 years, Pat, here in Denver.  He retired after working for Kroger for over 30 years.  He and Pat, a Denver native, attended Central Baptist Church at 2400 California Street and Bob always added a touch of class to Ogden Street decked out with his bride for Sunday services.  He saw a lot of changes in San Rafael over the years, both good and not so good, but he was always supportive of the efforts to preserve the historical character of the neighborhood.

Recently, Bob cared for Pat as she battled cancer and he was so happy to share news of Pat recently going into remission.  And now, with all of the expenses for Bob's funeral, Pat and Bob's family need financial help to replace the furnace so that Pat can return to her home in San Rafael where she would like to be.  The cost for the furnace replacement is expected to be in excess of $4,500.00.  Please make a contribution today in honor and remembrance of Bob so that Pat can come home soon!  Our condolences to all of Bob's family, friends and neighbors.  He was a good man and will be missed, Thank you for giving!
