Hello All,
I am Victoria Thompson (eldest daughter of Bruce and Lisa Thompson) and am posting on Bruce Thompson's behalf.
I am sure those of you that know my father have noticed that he has been radio silent for the last month. Well I am wanting to post to let everyone know the why behind the silence.
On June 27, 2017 my father started vomiting and continued to do so for 4 days. My mother then took him to the ER (July 1st), where they gave him fluids because of severe dehydration. His blood work was a little off so they made sure to let him know to follow up with his Primary Care Physician (PCP).
After going home he still did not feel well. He did see his PCP on Wed., where thy did bloodwork. On July 8th he attempted to go back to work (since being off since June 27th). Once at work his coworkers told him that he looked unwell and that he should go back to the ER at the Little Rock VA. Once in the ER after getting results from bloodwork they determined he needed to be admitted due to severe dehydration, moderate kidney failure and high calcium levels.
My father was in the hospital until July 19th. While in the hospital after a multitude of tests they determined that he has a blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. After further genetic testing they found that he has High Risk Factor - IgA Kappa (t(14;16)) and is at stage 3. IgA accounts for 20% of Multiple Myeloma cases.
After being discharged, he was able to start treatment.
My father was home until he spiked a fever on the 29th of July. My mother took him to the ER where they admitted him once again. It took until the 4th of August for him not to have a fever for 48 hours without medicine to help.
After being discharged he went back on the chemo treatment plan.
On August 11, he spiked another fever and was again admitted to the hospital.
Through talking with his Oncology team, it is looking like he is having a reaction to a part of his chemo treatment. As long as no other issues arise he will get to go home once he is without fever for 48 hours without medication. They are going to make changes to his chemo treatment and continue to try the best to get him into remission.
Once in remission he will have to have a stem cell transplant.
We have started paperwork for disability but are unsure of how long that will take.
My mother is going to go on Leave Of Absence (LOA) due to the increase in hospital visits/stays and appointments. Also due to the side effects of the chemo and the Multiple Myeloma. Some of the symptoms are extreme fatigue, nauseousness, constant pain, over exhertion, etc.
If anyone is willing and able to help monetarily it would be an extreme help.
