The British Malaysian Society Children's Book Project 2021/2022

The British Malaysian Society (BMS) is currently working on a book project of which we are very proud, where we collect second-hand and new children’s books from libraries, publishers, primary and secondary schools, and other donors in the UK and send these for use by schools, nurseries and other educational groups in rural communities in Malaysia, to help children expand and develop their use of English with confidence and enjoyment. By doing so they will widen their career choices and create greater opportunities to follow their chosen paths.

This is a very important project to the BMS and is entirely consistent with our social responsibility framework and practice. We started our first book project over 20 years ago and have to date successfully distributed over 10,000 books throughout rural schools and educational groups in Malaysia. The project aims to improve accessibility to education, consistent with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 which is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

Our partner in Malaysia, The Kalsom Movement, have started a Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Programme, where an older child will read with and support and encourage a younger or less confident child. In many cases books donated by the BMS have been used in this programme, and one of the PAL workshops was attended by the former Deputy Education Minister II, YB. Kamalanathan A/P Panchanathan.

The collection process for the 2021/2022 Children’s Book Project drive has already commenced as we look to source English fictional and non-fictional reading books, reference and subject books for children between the ages of 5 to 12. We would very much appreciate your help with the sourcing and collection of books, or by way of a donation. We are arranging significantly discounted transport arrangements through our partners and we plan to ship the books to Malaysia in phases starting in Autumn 2022.

If you have any books you would like to donate, if you would like to make a financial donation to the project, or if you can help in any way in what we believe is an excellent educational cause that can help many thousands of children over time, please contact Stephanie at mybooksuperpower at gmail.com
